Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gardner of Elroy and Mrs. Charlotte Raese of Wonewoc. Great grandfather is Bill Raese, Union Center.

Neillsville-CART Hosts Kids’ Summer Art Camp (14/15 August - 2024)

Clark Cultural Art Center (CART) hosted Kids’ Summer Art Camp for kids ages seven to 12 August 14 -15. After the kids finished their art projects, an art and piano show were held at CART August 15 at 6:30 p.m.

CART is located in the former United Methodist Church. The church was built in the late 1800s. The stained-glass windows and paintings decorate the sanctuary, a perfect place for an art and piano show.

Debby DeWitt, CART board member, spent time working the kids. “We were fortunate to have ten kids this year,” she said. “They took a sketching class. They decorated clay pots; they drew the design and decorated them. Some are simple; others are detailed.”

DeWitt has been involved with CART for five years. “I like working with children. They’re our future. If they can be encouraged with their creativity and individual expression and feel good about themselves, it’s wonderful,” she said. “It’s been an absolute pleasure working with these young people.”

According to DeWitt, the kids have a wide range of abilities. They made their own lunches of garlic toast pizza, frozen berry yogurt, walking tacos, and fruit. “The Kids’ Summer Art Class was from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for two days. The cost was $20 per child. A grant from Xcel Energy funded part of the program,” said DeWitt. “CART gives opportunities for kids to come and experience the arts: sketching, painting, culinary arts, barn quilts and clay pots.”

Along with the young artists showcasing their art projects, two talented ladies from Neillsville, Julianna Ruegsegger and Abigail “Abby” Mathis entertained guests by playing the baby grand piano, donated by Rosie and Jim Repinski. “The piano needs to be played,” said Rosie Repinski.

Barb Petkovsek, CART volunteer, introduced the pianists. “Ruegsegger performed her first piano concert at age 12. She charged a nickel for tickets,” said Petkovsek. “Music allows me to express emotions when words fail,” Ruegsegger said. “Abby Mathis plays guitar, piano and sings,” said Petkovsek. Mathis finds joy in all three.

“CART is nonprofit,” said Petkovsek. “We received a grant from Xcel Energy. They play a large role in our programs.”

Judges Present award of Excellence to Clark County Fair Exhibitors (2024)

Dairy awards stack up after fair

The Clark County Fair’s various judges awarded the Award of Excellence to exhibitors in many categories and classes, both for animal and non-animal exhibits.

Just a few of the animal departments included dairy, beef and sheep.

The dairy show had the most awards presented to the most exhibitors of any animal show of the Clark County Fair.
Livia Sandelier of the Loyal FFA received the award it supreme showman, took first place in seventh–eighth grade showmanship and was named the Ayrshire grand champion, the Ayrshire junior champion, the R&W Holstein grand champion, the R&W Holstein junior champion and the R&W Holstein supreme reserve champion (heifer).

Ella Raatz of the Junior Holstein Association took first place in 11th grade and older showmanship, and was named the reserve supreme showman, the Ayrshire reserve grand champion, the Ayrshire reserve junior champion, the Ayrshire reserve supreme champion (Heifer), the Guernsey grand champion and the Guernsey junior champion.

Jane Ruzic of the Rock Creek Rangers 4-H won first place in third–fourth grade showmanship.

Alainna Goessl of the Woodgrove Workers 4-H placed second in third–fourth grade showmanship.

Mason Kunze of the Maplewood Badgers 4-H took third place in third–fourth grade showmanship.

Izaak Penterman of the Reseburg Ramblers 4-H won first place in fifth–sixth grade showmanship.

Evelyn Goessl of the Woodgrove Workers 4-H took second place in fifth–sixth grade showmanship.

Evan Penterman of the Reseburg Ramblers 4-H took second place in seventh–eighth grade showmanship and was named the R&W Holstein reserve grand champion and the R&W Holstein reserve junior champion.

McKenzie Meyer of the Maplewood Badgers 4-H placed third in seventh–eighth grade showmanship and was named the B&W Holstein grand champion, the B&W Holstein senior champion, the B&W Holstein junior champion, the B&W Holstein supreme champion (heifer) and the B&W Holstein supreme champion (cow).

Jacob Raatz of the Junior Holstein Association won first place in ninth–10th grade showmanship and was named the Jersey reserve junior champion.

Madison Stieglitz of the Greenwood FFA placed second in ninth–10th grade showmanship.

Jack Wendler of the Woodgrove Workers 4-H took third place in ninth–10th grade-showmanship and was named the Guernsey reserve grand champion and the Guernsey reserve junior champion.

Aspen Hagen of the Loyal FFA took second place in 11th grade and older showmanship.

Jenelle Ertl of the Maplewood Badgers 4-H placed third in 11th grade and older showmanship.

Aydin Sternitzky Granton FFA waned named the Brown Swiss grand champion and the Brown Swiss Senior champion.
Maddie Haas of the Reseburg Ramblers 4-H was named the Brown Swiss reserve grand champion and the Brown Swiss junior champion.

Kendall Luzinski of the Thorp FFA was named the Brown Swiss reserve junior champion, the Jersey grand champion, the Jersey reserve grand champion, the Jersey senior champion and the Jersey reserve senior champion.

Jenelle Ertl of the Maplewood Badgers 4-H was named the B&W Holstein reserve grand champion and the B&W Holstein reserve senior champion.

Ryan Magnuson of the Neillsville FFA was named the B&W Holstein reserve junior champion.

McKayla Johansson of the Romadka 4-H was named the Jersey junior champion.

Tanna Luchterhand of the Jr. Milking Shorthorn was named the Milking Shorthorn grand champion, the Milking Shorthorn reserve grand champion, the Shorthorn Milking Shorthorn senior champion, the Milking Shorthorn reserve senior champion and the Milking Shorthorn cow supreme reserve champion.

Emily Gerhardt of the Neillsville Lights 4-H was named the Milking Shorthorn junior champion and the Milking Shorthorn reserve junior champion.

Mason Rudnick of the Reseburg Ramblers 4-H was named the any other breed grand champion and the senior champion.
Grayce Wilke of the Loyal Lads and Lassies 4-H was named the any other breed reserve grand champion and the any other breed junior champion.

Wesley Rudnick of the Reseburg Ramblers 4-H was named the any other breed reserve junior champion.

Krejci, Devere Edward (5 October 1936 - 27 August 2024)


Devere Krejci, age 87, of Neillsville, died Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the Clark County Living and Rehabilitation Center in Owen.


Devere Edward Krejci was born on October 5, 1936, in Neillsville, the son of Rex and Eunice (Grosnick) Krejci. He graduated from Neillsville High School in 1954, and then worked at the Cenex Co-op Gas Station on the corner of 6th and West Street, where he eventually became manager. On January 11, 1958, he was united in marriage to Barbara L. Struble. They later divorced in 2005. Devere worked for a short time with Mathy Construction, and several years for Gaier Construction before becoming a welder at the Nelson Muffler Factory. He worked at Nelson for over 30 years, retiring in 2006 when the factory shut its doors.


In his spare time, Devere enjoyed hunting, fishing and an occasional trip to the casino. He loved working outdoors, and feeding the birds. He especially enjoyed feeding the vast number of humming birds, sometimes as many as twenty at a time, that would visit him in the summer.


Devere is survived by four children, Scott Krejci of Newburg, IN, Pamela Radcliffe of Edina, MN, Kevin (Cindy) Krejci of Wausau, and Ron (Mandy) Krejci of Neillsville, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two sisters, Bonnie (Arnie) Eisentraut of AZ and Pat (Ken) Christy of La Crosse, and a sister-in-law, Rae Ann Krejci of Weston.


He was preceded in death by a son, Dwayne, his parents and a brother, Lee.


A graveside service for Devere will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Szymanski, Richard Joseph “Rich” (14 February 1934 – 27 August 2024) With Flag

Richard J. "Rich" Szymanski, 90, of Thorp, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

Richard Joseph Szymanski was born on February 14, 1934, on the home farm north of Thorp in the Town of Withee, to John and Louise (Dobrzynski) Szymanski. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the Thorp area, graduating from Thorp High School in 1952. After high school, Rich worked on the family farm for a year before enlisting into the U.S. Army in October of 1954. He did his Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, before his marriage to Elaine E. Cook on August 16, 1955, at St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp. They moved to Fort Knox, KY where he was stationed in the military, and returned to Thorp following his honorable discharge in October of 1956. He spent one year working for Doc Stuesser, then he and Elaine bought a farm southeast of Thorp on October 1, 1957, where they raised their family of 8 children. They retired in 1997, at which time their son, Mike, took over the family farm. They moved into Thorp where they built a home, and have resided there since. After retiring, Rich served on the Thorp City Council and drove school bus.

He had many interests, but especially loved spending time with his family, traveling, and spending some of the winter in Arizona. Rich was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Thorp American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his children: Cindy (Jim) Alger of Thorp, Pam Szymanski of Sparta, Rick (Margie) Szymanski of Loyal, Mike (Brenda) Szymanski of Greenwood, Bob (Dawn) Szymanski of Eau Claire, Holly (John) Noah of Thorp, and John (Sherrie) Szymanski of Thorp; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother: Jerry (Rosemary) Szymanski of West Salem; three sisters-in-law: Marjorie Izydorek of Thorp, Jean Hampton of Orlando, FL, and Gail Dunlop of Deerbrook; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rich was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, on September 23, 2021; his parents; one daughter, Susan E. Szymanski, on April 19, 2011; one granddaughter, Sara M. Alger, on August 15, 1995; one brother, Leonard; and one sister, Florence Lato.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp. Rev. Stanley Michael Antony will officiate, and burial will follow in New St. Hedwig Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given in Rich's name for a memorial to be established at a later date.

The Colby VFW Auxiliary and the Post 2227 held their annual Christmas party on Monday evening, December 12, 1977, at the clubhouse.

Potluck supper was served followed by the regular meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary. There were 22 members with 15 post members as guests.

A plaque congratulating the post members on the burning of the mortgage was presented to Commander Kenneth Cole by Auxiliary President Irma Schultz. It commemorates years of hard work by several dedicated members of both the Post and Auxiliary, who volunteered their services with or without pay.

Two members, Colleen Hoffman and Eileen Lyons were voted in by the auxiliary. Dime for Heaven was won by Julie Janenne.

Following the meeting games were played and gifts passed out by Santa’s helper Beverly Laski. Door prizes were won by Pat Leick and Herman Hoffman.

On Sunday afternoon a group of Green Grove Church youngsters went caroling throughout the area and delivered Christmas boxes to shut-ins. Those taking part included Peggy and Nancy Sommers, Rod and Cheri Garvey, and Cheryl, Susanne, Mark, Darrell and Karlene Schuette. A Christmas part was held for them later at the home of Mrs. Sandra Bertepelle, with Mrs. Merlin Obernberger as hostess.

Kronschnabl, Rose M. (3 Nov 1903 – 15? Dec 1977)

Funeral services were held Monday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Dorchester, for Miss Rose M. Kronschnabl, 74, Dorchester. She died at 1:50 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield from an apparent heart attack. The Rev. James Schaefer officiated and burial was in Dorchester Catholic Cemetery. Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home was in charge, and a joint Rosary-Altar Society and Women Forester Rosary was said at 4 p.m., in addition to a parish Rosary at 8 p.m. Sunday. Pallbearers were: George Greaser, Edward Werner, W.C. Pinter, Dennis Mertens, Donald Pickett, and Arnold Rhyner.

Rose Kronschnabl was born November 3, 1903 at Dorchester. He parents were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kronschnabl. She received her elementary education in Dorchester schools and attended Medford High School. She worked as a telephone operator for Midway Telephone Company in Dorchester, and also worked in the Dorchester Post Office. From 1945 until 1970 she worked for the Skerbeck Amusement Company. She lived in Dorchester all her life.

She was a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church; a member of the Rosary-Altar Society, and of St. Louis Court of the National Catholic Society of Foresters.

She is survived by two brothers, Max Kronschnabl and Jerome Kronschnabl; and three sisters; Mrs. Carl (Helen) Mertens; Mrs. Clifford (Mildred Herman, and Miss Cecilia Kronschnabl, all of Dorchester.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and one sister.
