Norlyn Bayogos (pictured to the right) June Thompson/Clark County Press
By June Thompson
A new school year is beginning for Neillsville students and for teachers. There
are several new teachers ready to begin teaching in the Neillsville School
District.
One of the new elementary teachers is Lexi Opelt. This is her fourth-year
teaching elementary. She will be teaching kindergarten. Opelt has goals for her
students. “I want my students to learn and have fun, and enjoy being at school,”
she said, “I’m excited. I’ll always want to teach elementary.” Opelt’s favorite
subject is reading, and she enjoys playing volleyball.
Paige Gruenling will be teaching first grade. It is her first-year teaching. “I
want to build meaningful relationships with students and parents,” she said.
“I’d like to teach the foundations of reading/phonics.”
Gruenling plans to read a lot to her students. Her favorite subject is English.
Some of her favorite books are the Pigeon Series and Eric Carlisle books. She
loves crafts and hiking and walking her dogs.
Some of the new teachers teach a specialized subject. Briana Post will be
teaching sixth grade math in the middle school. This is her first-year teaching.
Post has expectations for the school year— “getting my students to want to learn
math and keep them excited throughout the year,” she said. Her goals are to
balance time between her work and personal life. Her favorite subjects are math
and science.
Jessica Griesbach will teach second grade. This is her fifth year in education.
She previously worked in the Marshfield School District. She expects her
students to “be respectful and be responsible and have a willing mindset for
learning,” she said. “I love to watch kids learn. I love being part of building
their future.”
Griesbach’s favorite subject is math. “Math came easy to me It’s rewarding to
teach math,” she said. “It’s a life skill. Numbers is a whole other language.”
She encourages her students to keep trying if they’re struggling. “There are
multiple ways to do it [math]. Find a way you understand it,” Griesbach said.
She encourages her students to learn “hands-on.” “Kids need that,” she said.
Griesbach hobbies are traveling, camping, biking and hiking.
Neillsville Public Schools has another new math teacher this year. Alex Bloch
will teach high school math (algebra). This is his first-year teaching. He
studied at the UW-Stevens Point. “I want to create good relationships with
students and be a good math teacher,” he said. Bloch’s hobbies are hunting,
sports, and coaching football.
His favorite subject is math. “I was really good at it,” Bloch said. “I can give
back to kids who didn’t have the privilege of math knowledge,” he said. “I had
good teachers. I think I’ll always teach math.”
Todd Fischer is a new high school teacher. He will be teaching high school
social studies, and eighth grade leadership class.
Fischer first started teaching in 1995 and went into administration. He left the
teaching profession for a while to be a prison guard/teacher at Black River
Falls Correctional Facility. He taught basic education, math and English.
Yet Fischer returned to the teaching profession. “I do enjoy working with kids,”
he said. Fischer would like to take his students to Washington D.C. “I’ll teach
historical thinking for students to create their own opinions.”
Fischer would like his students to learn facts and get to the source of things.
“History—it’s someone’s story.” He wants to make it come alive for his students.
Fischer likes teaching social studies, (sociology), geography and history. His
hobbies are mountain biking, hiking and kayak. He likes to read murder mysteries
for fun.
Norlyn Bayogos was a public high school teacher in the Philippines. She is in
her seventh-year teaching English. This is her first time teaching in the United
States and traveling abroad.
“I have been given the opportunity to teach in Neillsville through a cultural
exchange program,” said Bayogos. “One of my goals is to share the warm and
vibrant Filipino culture and learn more about the American culture and its
teaching innovations.”
“I am passionate about literature and creative writing,” said Bayogos.
“As a teacher, I want to help students love reading, writing, learning and
appreciate diversity,” she said. “When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me enjoying
music, reading, or catching up on Netflix series.”

Neillsville - Reed Schoolhouse Offers Lessons of the Past (2024)

One-room Schoolhouse Offers Lessons of the Past (2024)
One of the many classes in Reed School. This one is most likely from the 1940s.

By June Thompson
The new school year is beginning. Students in the upper grades can choose a
variety of classes/curriculum that weren’t offered in the last century. Today,
students can take technology courses to prepare them for the workforce or enroll
in college classes while still in high school.
During the1800s up until the early 1960s, children were educated in one-room
schoolhouses, first through the eighth grade. Schools dotted the rural Wisconsin
landscape as the place where children learned basic skills such as arithmetic,
reading and writing, and cursive writing. A pot-belly stove warmed the school,
and children used an outhouse. It could be considered a simpler way of life or a
harsher way of life, depending on a person’s perspective.
Many of these schools became private residences or were razed like the Uncle Sam
Schoolhouse on Hwy 73. Another school, Reed School is located on Hwy 10-Cardinal
Avenue. It is currently a museum, open on weekends Memorial Day through Labor
Day or by appointment.
Tour guide Pat Langreck attended a one-room schoolhouse. “I like history,” she
said. “We’ve had kids and adults come to see Reed School.”
The original Reed School was built in 1878. Thomas Reed was a Pleasant Ridge
farmer and community leader who donated the land for the school. It burnt and
another school was built in 1915 and stayed open until 1951.
There were generally between 20 to 40 students attending the school. However,
enrollment dropped down to two students in the early 1960s, and soon thereafter,
the school closed. By 1962 nearly all Wisconsin one-room schools were closed.
During the 1929-30 school year, the monthly salary of a schoolteacher was $110.
But during the 1938-39 school year, the salary was $87.50.
This difference could be because of the Great Depression.
Dale Dickerson, tour guide for six years, is a retired teacher from Marshfield.
He taught technology education. “I construct the lesson plans and small
activities for weekend visitors,” he said. “I try to make it fun. The Gordon V.
and
Helen C. Smith Foundation made this possible. They gave an endowment to leave a
legacy for the next generation.”
Dickerson has given tours to fourth graders during the school year. “The
youngsters are the most impressionable,” he said. “I love history. There’s
something rich and warm about it.”
He’s had students that weren’t prepared to learn in a one-room schoolhouse for a
day. “When I told a student/girl there was no running water, and that she’d have
to use the outhouse, her reply was, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ Kids didn’t
know there was an outhouse,” said Dickerson.
The Reed School Museum opened in 2007. The Gordon V. and Helen C. Smith
Foundation in cooperation with the Wisconsin Historical Society took over a year
to complete the renovation project.
In 1939, six-year-old Gordon Smith attended Reed School. “Six weeks was enough
of an impression on Gordon for him to come back and restore the school,” said
Dickerson. “Gordon Smith is related to the Suckow family in the area,” said
Dickerson.
“This school was built in three months, a testament to the community. People
wanted their children to grow up with an education,” said Dickerson. “The people
who attended this school have rich stories to share. Things were a lot different
then, a totally different mindset,” he said. “The best visitors are from the
community. You’ll always learn something here.”
