Courtland, Ernest K. (8 May 1909 – 17 October 1986) Wi4th Flag

Ernest K. Courtland, 71, of 202 W. 4th St., Neillsville, died on Friday, October 17, following a lingering illness, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.

Mr. Courtland was born May 8, 1909, in Beloit. Following his education at Sparta and Chippewa Falls schools, he worked in the Neillsville and Chippewa Falls areas before entering the military service on April 18, 1942. As a United States Army PFC, he served in Africa before his discharge on April 13, 1945. Returning to Neillsville, he married Mamie E. Wesenberg on January 4, 1944, and the couple farmed for several years. In 1947, he began employment with Nelson Muffler, in Neillsville, and remained there until his retirement in 1975.

His wife survives him; and he was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Father Joseph Henseler officiated funeral services Monday, October 20, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Music was provided by Mark Voll and Deon Spangler. Interment was made in Neillsville City Cemetery. Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Serving as pallbearers were Orville Jake and Arnold Carl, Pete, Norman, Harvey and Arnold Wesenberg.

Dill, Henry (24 August 1918 – 14 August 1986)

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 14, for Henry Dill, 67, of Evanston, Illinois, at Trinity Lutheran Church and interment at Memorial Park in Evanston. The Rev. Philip Quanbeck officiated. Henry had triple bypass heart surgery August 7.

Henry was born August 24, 1918, in Greenwood, and was educated in Greenwood schools. On October 1, 1949, he married Pauline Johns in Chicago, Illinois. Henry was a member of the Evanston Elks Club.

He is survived by his wife; a son and a daughter, Norman Johns, Roselle, Il.; and Mrs. James (Pat) Christophersen, Skokie, Il.; and four grandchildren. Other survivors include four sisters, Alberta Thomas, Las Vegas; Anita Abel, Greenwood; Julia Mitte, Neillsville; and Mrs. Louis (Beulah) Matkovich, Willard; three brothers, Gottlieb, Neillsville; Gilbert, Willard; and Harvey, Greenwood.

Pallbearers were Don Kirn, Willard; Victor Lawson, Jack Carpenter, Edwin Barczuk, Ray Allen, Evanston; and James Marinos, San Diego, California.

Relatives attending from the area were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Matkovich, Mr. and Mrs. Don Kirn and family of Willard, and Mr. and Mrs. Nick Matkovich and family of Owen.

Gorzelitz, Otto (27 April 1901 – 6 September 1986)

Eighty-five year old Otto Gorzelitz, of 1201 Garfield Ave., Little Chute, died Saturday, September 6.

He was born April 27, 1901, Oshkosh. Mr. Gorzelitz farmed at Neillsville until 1961 when he moved to Kaukauna, where he had been employed at Kaukauna Machine Corporation and at the Conway Hotel in Appleton until his retirement.

Survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Jeanne of Kaukauna; three grandsons, Joseph, Emmet and Matthew, all of Kaukauna two granddaughters, Julie Jansch of Kimberly and Katie Gorzelitz at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh; and a brother, Gus of Kaukauna. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Angeline, in 1942, and an infant daughter, at birth, and his second wife, Vivian, in 1963.

Funeral services were at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kaukauna, the Rev. Mark Neitzel officiating. Burial was in Neillsville City Cemetery. Greenwood Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Hecker, Julia (1 April 1890 - ? August 1986)

Mrs. Joseph (Julia) Hecker, 96, died unexpectedly at her daughter’s cottage at Clarks Lake, MI., where she had been vacationing.

The former Julia Ystad was born April 1, 1890, In Greenwood, a daughter of Hans and Jorgene (Hembre) Ystad. She married Joseph Hecker on June 11, 1912, in Greenwood. They farmed in the Town of Loyal. Her husband died November 27, 1962. She lived most of her life in Loyal, residing the past eight years with her daughter in Toledo.

Surviving are three daughters, Mildred Robinson of California; Lorene Devine of Toledo; and Mary Ann Studnicka of Milwaukee; two brothers, Ralph of Greenwood; Lee of Berlin; four sisters, Amanda Goehring of Loyal; Ellen Ystad of Owen; Jeanette Pasch of Milwaukee and Alcy Jansen of California; 34 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, five sons and one daughter.

Services were held Wednesday, August 13, at Rinka Funeral Home in Loyal. The Rev. Dennis Lynch officiated. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Greenwood.

Holub, Ervin (24 May 1913 – 18 October 1986)

Rural Neillsville resident Ervin Holub, 73, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 18. He had been in failing health for some time.

Born on May 24, 1913, in Buckley, Michigan, he was a son of Joseph and Frieda (Karala) Holub. At the age of one year, he moved with his parents to the Town of Levis and was later educated at Meadow View School. For several years he farmed with his parents, then worked as a county surveyor and operated the grader for the Town of Levis.

On August 12, 1939, he married Elsie Marek, at Black River Falls. Until his retirement in 1973, he was a 28-year employee of the Neillsville Farmers Union Co-op.

Besides his wife and son, Harold, of Neillsville, he is survived by a grandchild; a sister, and two brothers, Lillian McCarty, Edward and George, all of Neillsville. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Ladd and Joseph.

Services were held at Gesche Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 21, with Rev. Paul Forde officiating. Charlotte Drescher provided music. Burial was made in Dells Dam Cemetery. Pallbearers included Tom Meyer, Maynard Anason, Frank Ceranowski, Kenneth Opelt, Robert Halverson and Duane Elertson.

Hrasky, William J. (7 April 1907 – 4 September 1986)

Seventy-nine year old Neillsville resident William J. Hrasky, of 113 State St., passed away suddenly Thursday, September 4.

Mr. Hrasky was born in Elgin, Illinois, on April 7, 1907, a son of Godilieb and Elizabeth Hrasky. When he was seven years old his family moved to the Town of Washburn, and he attended school at Granton and graduated from Neillsville High School with the Class of 1925. He worked as a mechanic in Neillsville for many years. In 1954, he began employment with Nelson Muffler and worked there until his retirement in 1972.

He married Margaret E. Ruddock, in Neillsville, on May 29, 1938. She survives him. During his retirement years he worked for Urban Motors and The Black River Country Shopper, and also building and flying airplanes was one of his favorite hobbies.

Besides his wife, Mr. Hrasky is survived by two children, Franklin of Neillsville and Mrs. Lonnie (Carol) Kuhn of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and one granddaughter. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Agnes and Rose; and a brother, Anton.

Rev. Howard Ott conducted funeral rites on Monday, September 8, at Gesche Funeral Home. Mrs. Iris Musil was the accompanist. Interment was in Neillsville City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Dale Short, Clarence Schlinkert, Donald Kalsow, Lloyd Zimmerman, Fred Vornholt and Anton Bichler.

Arthur L. “Skid” Johnson, 74, of Neillsville, died Saturday, August 20, at Memorial hospital in Belleville

He was a maintenance man for the Signal Hill School District; a member of the Illinois Pilots Association-Gateway Chapter; Molders Local No. 59 of St. Louis, Mo.; life member of O’Fallon Sportsman’s Club. Mr. Johnson was born in Greenwood, in 1912.

Surviving are his wife, the former Emma H. Kessler; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Liliane Johnson of Phoenix, AZ.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and Ronald Groom of Cahokia, IL, and Patricia and Roger Reichling of Belleville, Il.; a brother, Elmer and his wife Eleanor Johnson of Malta, Il; a sister, Mrs. Edith Stout of Rockford, Il.; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, Henry and Karen, (nee Halverson) Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pete Gardner Funeral Home in Belleville. Burial was in Valhalla Gardens of Memory.

Memorials may be made to the Belleville Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Jurcek, Joseph A. (9 April 1928 – 13 October 1986) With Flag

Joseph A. Jurcek, age 58, of Hatfield, died Monday, October 13, in his home, as result of a heart attack.

He was born on April 9, 1928, in Milwaukee, to Joseph and Mary (Jezo) Jurcek and later served in the U.S. Army. He married the former Nancy A. Wendt on August 20, 1949, in Milwaukee. The couple lived in Greenfield, until moving to Hatfield in 1974. Jurcek was first employed at Gugler Litho, Milwaukee, and for the past 30 years had been employed at Moebius Printing also in Milwaukee. While living in Greenfield, Jurcek was a member of the Greenfield Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Black River Falls; the Hatfield Sportsmen’s Club; and the Graphic Arts International Union Local 277.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Pamela (Richard) Tupta and Judith (James) Stillman, both of Milwaukee, and Jill (Steven) Merriman, of Amityville, Pennsylvania; three sons, Peter, Patrick, and Charles (Lori), all of Milwaukee; four sisters, Mary Czemierys, of Pewaukee, Frances (Edwin) Ambacher, of Hatfield, Josephine Andejat and Virginia (William) Ryan, both of Milwaukee; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services were Friday, October 17, 10:30 a.m., at the Hatfield Cemetery, with the Rev. James Barney officiating. The Charles Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, was in charge of arrangement.

Krause, Herman H. (7 August 1911 – 29 August 1986)

Herman H. Krause, 75, of Chippewa Falls and formerly of Greenwood, died Monday, August 29, at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire.

Mr. Krause was born August 7, 1911, in Hilbert, a son of Edwin and Eleanora (Beil) Krause. While he was a child he moved with his parents to Curtiss. On March 31, 1939, he married Irene V. Papenfuss, in Waukon, Iowa. She died February 1, 1975.

He was employed as a cheesemaker at Huron and Maple Hill, moving to Chippewa Falls in 1946, where he worked as a truck driver for the Soo Line Trucking Company, returning to Greenwood in 1954. He resumed work as a cheesemaker. He had resided in Chippewa Falls since 1975.

Surviving is a daughter, Beverly Strebig, Chippewa Falls; six brothers, Soleman of Marshfield, Merwin of Westboro, Alvin of Augusta; Edwin, Ervin and Calvin, all of Curtiss; and one granddaughter. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his parents and one sister in infancy.

Services were held Thursday, September 4, at the Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls. The Rev. Roger Skatrud of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Chippewa Falls officiated. Burial was at Pine Hill Cemetery, in Curtiss.

Krom, Harold D. (15 July 1910 – 10 September 1986)

Masonic memorial services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 14, at Gesche Funeral Home for seventy-six year old Harold D. Krom, of 311 Schofield, Greenwood. Mr. Krom passed away Wednesday morning, September 10, at Neillsville Memorial Home. Interment will be in B’nai B’rith Jewish Cemetery, Eau Claire.

Mr. Krom was born at Withee on July 15, 1910, and was a son of Ben and Dora (Mendelson) Krom. After graduating from Withee High School, he attended UW-Madison and graduated in 1932 from the School of Pharmacy. Returning to Withee, he owned and operated the Withee Drug Store until 1962.

On June 23, 1963, he married Virginia H. Abrahamson in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The couple resided in Greenwood where he owned the Greenwood the Greenwood Pharmacy until his retirement. He continued to work for various are pharmacies while he was retired.

Surviving besides his wife is a daughter, Debra R., of Highland Park, Illinois and a brother, Milton of Withee. Mr. Krom was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Saul and George.

Reichert, Alvin B. (2 March 1888 – 5 September 1986) With Flag

Alvin B. Reichert, 98, of 1206 Beloit Ave., Janesville, died Friday, September 8 in Mercy Hospital.

Born March 2, 1888, in Granton, he was a Janesville resident the past 45 years. He married Mayme Hilgendorf on November 25, 1926, in Washington, D.C.

For 20 years he was a watchmaker at Tietz Jewelry Store, in Janesville, retiring in 1965. A World War I veteran, he was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and World War I Rock County Barracks and was a former mayor of Granton. He was the chief page of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington in 1926.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Russell of Janesville and Charles of Dallas, Texas; and a granddaughter.

Services were held Sunday, September 7, in Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, with burial Monday in Milton Lawns Memorial Park, Janesville.

Schlinsog, Edward (23 July 1900 – 29 September 1986)

Eighty-six year old Edward Schlinsog, a resident of Neillsville Memorial Home, died Monday afternoon, September 29, at Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Schlinsog was born July 23, 1900, at the Town of Grant, a son of Herman and Clara (Beer) Schlinsog. He attended Granton Parochial School. On November 1, 1923, he married Lillie Lindow, at Auburndale. The couple farmed in the Towns of Grant and Fremont, the last 34 years in the Town of Fremont.

Surviving besides his wife are three children; Mrs. Clarence (Norene) McHone, Granton; Ronald of Kenosha and Claire of Milton; ten grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren; a brother and sister, Harry Schlinsog, Neillsville, and Mrs. Violet Jones, Oshkosh. He was predeceased by two brothers.

Gilbertson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and services were held Thursday, October 2 at Zion Lutheran Church, Granton. Rev. Herbert Biermann officiated; Mrs. Roger Helm was organist. Interment was in the church cemetery and grandsons served as pallbearers.
