Joseph Jantsch, a native of the Dorchester area, has been honored recently when
the board of education of Spokane, Washington Continuation High School voted to
rename the school. The 44-year-old high school will become the Joseph Jantsch
Senior High School, in honor of the founder of the school back in 1932.
The Continuation High School was started by Jantsch at Lew and Clark High School
in Spokane to teach students on a “one-to-one” basis. This was thought to be the
first high school of its kind in the United States. During the first 27 years
Jantsch was principal and only teacher at the school. At 82, he still lives in
Spokane.
Jantsch was born in the Town of Holton and received his early education in the
rural school at Bruckerville. He attended the universities at Stevens Pint, and
also at Superior and Madison. He taught in the Barry School in the Town of
Holton years ago, and taught in High schools in Wisconsin. Jantsch lived in
Milwaukee before he moved to Spokane, where he now resides.
His is broth to William and John Jantsch, both living in Dorchester.
