History of the County Poor Farm Cemetery
Contributor - Steven Lavey
The County "Poor" Farm was a county operated farm that accommodated people, particularly the elderly, who could not financially support themselves. It was located in Sections 31 and 32 of York Township. More specifically, it was located on County Highway C, several miles east of State Highway 73. The old County Farm barn can still be seen at the first farm on the right of County Highway C as the road curves north.
The cemetery is located in Section 32 near the northeast corner of the County Farm property. It is located in a small hollow. Therefore, the tombstones can not be seen from the County Highway C, only the tops of the trees that surround the cemetery. The cemetery is several hundred feet east of County Highway C. Private property must be crossed to access it, so request permission as appropriate.
The cemetery consists of five rows of tombstones; a total of approximately 87 tombstones. Many of the older tombstones inscriptions have weathered and are difficult to read.
