Anna L. Tupper's Portrait Studio
Greenwood, Clark Co., Wisconsin
The above ad appeared in the Greenwood Gleaner, February 2, 1900.
This business was owned by Anna Clare L. (Jenkinson) Tupper, a talented local
artist who was the wife of Benjamin T. Tupper, a stone mason and plasterer
who worked in and around Greenwood, Wisconsin.
Their son, Earl Benjamin, who was born in Rockwell City, Calhoun County, Iowa, married Mabel Elvina Peterson, December 6, 1913 in Watertown, Codington, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Elias and Olivia (Nore) Peterson. The couple later divorced. She had a second marriage in Watertown to Clifford James Stinson, February 18, 1918.

The 1900 census also shows Benjamin's parents and his brother Ashel's family residing in Clark County, in Warner township. Alvin is shown to be owning property there. Alvin and Ashel left Wisconsin in 1903/04 for Alberta, Canada. We believe Benjamin's family left for SD around 1906, but there are some conflicting records there.

Responses & Family Research
Just wanted to touch base with you on this again. I haven't forgotten about
writing more proper bios for the Tupper families, I've just felt that since
you have something basic there now, I might as well wait until I have a more
complete picture... I feel I'm getting close to that point, and I just
wanted to let you know that I made a big leap forward yesterday thanks to
your site.
One of my major tasks in all this has been to figure out what happened with
the EIGHT daughters of Alvin Baldwin Tupper... the 2 sons have been
straightforward to track of course, but the daughters have been a mystery
for the most part, as you would expect. I've slowly been finding them one by
one, but I still have a few to go.
One less, as of yesterday, however. :) I received my daily summary of the
Clark County yahoo group yesterday, and while I often don't look at them
until later, I opened it, scanned through the updates and didn't see
anything of interest. But I thought to myself "You know, it's been a long
time since I've been to the site, I should go take a look." And so I did.
The first thing that struck me was that you'd moved to a google site search
engine - I could be wrong, but I don't think you used them before. Anyway, I
popped in Tupper to see what would turn up. I got a bunch of old newspaper
mentions that I had seen before, and then I came across this one:

HEMLOCK Jan. 31
Mrs. Fred Limprecht drove down to York last Wednesday returning home the
following Saturday.
Owing to ill health, C. W. Chandler was compelled to leave his work in camp
and come home.
Mrs. K. Anderson returned home last Saturday, where she had been for the
greater part of two weeks caring for her son.
Mr. and Mrs. Tupper came out from their farm last Sunday and took dinner
with their daughter, Mrs. Tom Wilson.

Now, most of the newspaper articles on the site talk about Ben Tupper... but
he hadn't been married long enough at that time to have had any children old
enough to be married, so they had to be referring to Alvin Baldwin and
Annie. Given that the year was 1900, I immediately went to the census for
that year. No Tom Wilson in Clark County. That was a disappointment. So I
went back to the site, and searched for Tom Wilson. A couple of articles
popped up, most notably:

Hemlock
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Varney, Alba Varney, Mrs. Anderson and Birdene, from
Hemlock, attended the funeral of Mr. Alton Sunday.
There will be a Christmas tree and exercises in the town hall Christmas eve.
A eleven pound boy was born to Tom Wilson and wife the 15th. Tom better get
a hustle to himself or he'll soon have a son as big as himself.

That tidbit of news led me to the Wisconsin birth records, where I found the
following:
Name: Wilson
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 15 Dec 1900
Father's Name: John Thomas Wilson
Mother's Name: Maud Ethel Tupper
TOUCHDOWN! That sealed the deal: Mrs Tom Wilson was Alvin Baldwin Tupper's
daughter Maud. It also revealed that Tom's first name was John. With that
knowledge in hand, I immediately found them in the 1900 census (attached).
They are at the bottom of the page, and Maude's name is misspelled as Maden.
The family at the top of the next page? You guessed it - Alvin Baldwin
Tupper's.
I also found the 1910, 20, and 30 census records for them. From 1910 on, they
are in Chadron, Dawes County, Nebraska. It appears that they must have moved
there about the time everyone else pulled up stakes to come to Alberta. The
1910 census shows all 6 of the kids, and that there was a 7th that didn't
survive (born before 1900, based on that census). Unfortunately Wilson is a
very common name, so it will be tough sledding to get to living
descendents... but I have one potential lead already.
As for Maude, the 1920 census lists John Thomas Wilson as being Widowed...
and his WWI draft registration card lists his daughter Snow as his contact
relative, which would suggest she had passed by that time. So she died
fairly young - having been born in 1877, she would have been 40 at most. No
details on that yet.
Anyway, it was a very productive genealogical day, especially considering I
hadn't planned to do any! :) And all thanks to a visit to the Clark County
site. Thank you so much! The number of daughters left to track down
continues to dwindle... :)
I could not read all of the information. Can you tell me if the names are
correct?

Well, here's what I would suggest is incorrect, unless you have better
evidence to prove otherwise :-)
1) Maiden Name: You list her as Anna Clare (Plum) Tupper. Her maiden name
was actually Jenkinson, and I believe her middle initial is L. Iowa marriage
records show she was the daughter of James and Mary Jenkinson, and you can
find them in Lime Creek Twp, Cerro Gordo, Iowa in the 1880 census. They were
married on March 26, 1888, in Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa.
2) Benjamin's middle initial is T., not S. He was born in Lanark County,
Ontario, Canada, the first son of Alvin Baldwin Tupper and Elizabeth Annie
Vandusen. They resided in Montague Twp, Lanark, Ontario until 1870, when the
emigrated to the US. The family can be found in Osage, Mitchell, Iowa in
1870, and then Indianola, Red Willow, Nebraska in 1880. They then have two
3) Earl Benjamin was their first child, born May 17, 1891 in Rockwell, Cerro
Gordo, Iowa (the Rockwell City error is a common one propagated on the
internet). You can refer to Iowa Birth Records for confirmation. He did
marry Mabel, and they were divorced, apparently because of a bit of a
scandal I've just uncovered, so I'll have to get back to you on that. They
had a son Dale Elroy Tupper in 1915. Mabel did go on to remarry as
indicated.
4) I do not believe that the 1885 census records that you list are the
correct Benjamin and Annie Tupper. The other census records you list are
accurate.
5) The 1900 census also shows Benjamin's parents and his brother Ashel's
family residing in Clark County, in Warner township. Alvin is shown to be
owning property there... if you could offer any assistance in locating that,
it would be much appreciated. I know that Alvin and Ashel leave Wisconsin in
1903/04 for Alberta, Canada (Ashel is my great grandfather). I believe
Benjamin's family left for SD around 1906, but there are some conflicting
records there.
6) Children: The census records you show I believe show all their children.
Note that the Elmer listed in the 1920 census is actually Elmore M. Tupper,
listed in 1900. Elmore was born Aug 20, 1897 in Redwood Falls, Redwood,
Minnesota (although I've seen the year listed variously as 1895, 1896, and
1897. That is the last location I have for them prior to Greenwood.
7) Elmore did marry Juanita (aka Wanda) Boone, in 1921. And he served in WWI
- here is all I have on that at the moment:
Enlisted in Troop K, April 14, 1917. Transferred to Battery B. Shell-shocked
during Aisne-Marne Offensive. Date of arrival in United States and of
discharge not known.
8) Andy did marry Lola Butterick in 1924.
9) Title for the page read's "Albert Delaney's Store" rather than the
portrait studio, and the Obit link goes to the Delaney Obit. If you actually
have an obit for Anna I would love to have it.
Okay, I think that's it for now. If you have any additional info on the
Tupper's in Greenwood from that period, I would certainly appreciate it.
