A Freshman Lament
Although a fighter bold,
Even as the knights of old
I now do firmly stand for calm and peace.
For my reasons good and true,
I will soon expound to you
And you too will wish the cruel war to cease.
On an errand I was sent,
And some gasoline it meant
From the place that ‘s called the Big and Cheap Cash Store.
When the price I had been told,
I sure did have to scold,
But the clerk quickly blamed it to the war.
At the druggist’s it was plain,
When relieved of any pain;
A double price was added and some more.
Have mercy, I did cry
Though he never winked an eye,
But lightly blamed it to the cruel war.
If it’s prunes or shingle nails,
Wash tubs or water pails;
Or a little hit with which a hole to bore
The merchants one and all,
For their price so far from small,
Do gladly blame it to the cruel war.
As a Freshman here at school,
I must keep to every rule;
My lessons I must get just as before,
I should be extremely glad,
When my lessons are Mute bad,
Could I but blame it to the cruel war.
Now I’ve done my little
For to stop this awful fight;
Further reasons I could give you by the score; Such one-sided things of
life,
is the cause for most the strife,
Yet we all hap’ly blame it to the war.
