RURAL SCHOOL IS CONVERTED TO TOWN HALL
Neillsville-The former Hewettville School, 7 miles
west of Neillsville, now is the new Hewett Town Hall. Built about 1890 at a
location near the Snyder dam and airport, the school was moved several years
ago to its present location at a four corners, a mile north of the Julius
Martens and Kapfer corner. The building was recently improved with a new
roof, new chimney, newly painted and a well was drilled for water supply.
During the year the town of Hewett decided it
would like to sell the old town hall located on old Highway 18, about 2
miles east of Wildcat Mound. It was then decided to purchase the
Hewettville School, which was owned by the Neillsville High School district,
but not in use.
A bid of $900 was accepted by the school
district. The township then sold the old town hall to Albert Marg and a
group of friends of Neillsville for $416 to be used for a hunting lodge.
The old town hall has been painted by the new owners. The new town hall is
equipped with electric lights, furnace and is larger and at a more
convenient location for the large portion of the township citizens.
Arlo Durst, town chairman, also reports the
completion of a new bridge over Hay Meadow Creek, a mile north of the Arlo
Durst farm, on an east and west road of the township. The bridge was
constructed of wood pilings with a concrete bridge floor.
