THE FIRST SAWMILL IN CURTISS
CLARK COUNTY, WISCONSIN
"My Name Is Yon Yonson" is:
My name is Yon Yonson, I come from Visconsin,
I work in the lumber mills dere;
Ven I valk down de street, all de people I meet,
Dey say, "Hello, vat's your name?"
And I say
My name is Yon Yonson
I come from Visconsin, (and on to eternity--the song never ends)
Memories of
this early Norwegian lyric came from
Pat Phillips & Ken Wood.
Albert Bass & Clark built this mill on the creek, south of the present elevator and feed store in Curtiss, WI (1982). There was a pond behind the mill for floating logs and for use in the mill. The water barrels on the roof of the mill were used for fire protection. The stationary steam engine powered the large saws. Mr. Mrs. Albert Bass are just to the left of the dog in the forefront. My grandfather, Andrew Olson, is standing in the front row to the far right.

The Bass Logging Camp was located northwest of Curtiss, in the township of Hoard, WI. Matt Rued served as the camp cook (pictured above, wearing an apron). He was born in Norway and owned a forty acre farm in section 25 and eighty acres of woodland in Hoard Township, Clark County. Mr. Rued was married Mar. 25, 1889, to Rande Peterson, who was also born in Norway. In 1905 the buildings on their farm were destroyed by a tornado but were ultimately replaced. The Oxen, in the photo, were powerful animals which were used for hauling and skidding logs, as well as pulling sleighs.
