In the eighteen seventies,
Niran H. Withee built a stave and
heading mill in Longwood and later constructed the first cheese factory in
that part of Clark County. He also cleared a large farm and although he had
other homes and businesses, he always referred to Longwood as his "Home

William A. Zelm, owned and operated the Longwood cheese factory
pictured above. He purchased it from E.A. Laabs. Prior to his
residence in Longwood, he had made his home at Tony, Wis., where he
operated a cheese factory for about four years. He built up a fine
business, and established himself with the public as a good businessman
and a good citizen. Alton H. Jenkins, who operated a farm owned by
Otto Wetzel (his father-in-law) was also one of Zelm's trusted employees.
