PAULSON, Ross (10 Oct 1870-24 Nov 1967)
1885 Longwood News: “The factory is turning out some fine cheese, this season.”
On Withee’s Longwood Farms in sec 23 (said to be the first Creamery in Longwood Township) or in the SE corner of Longwood sec 22, later called Zelms Cheese Factory?
April 1899: “Ross Paulson, the Granton Creamery man, was in Neillsville this week. He says he expects to have a big run in business this summer and his creamery will start operations in two weeks.”
July 1900: “E. H. Tucker (Edger Tucker, cheese maker from “South York Cheese Factory”) was in town this week making arrangements to start the Longwood creamery, which has been rented for five years by Ross Paulson (butter maker) of Granton. A wagon will run from C. A. Estabrooks (Coon, Estabrooks & Clute, Hixon sec 6) on the main road north to Longwood, where they already have the milk from 100 cows promised. Wm. Goodwin (1905 Warner township census, age 43, day laborer) will be the driver. The milk will be taken up in the morning, separated at the creamery and the skimmed milk returned to the owner. Mr. Paulson is a creamery man of the hustling kind and has five creameries already in operation in this county – or soon will have. The customers of the Granton Creamery received 17.2 cents per pound for their butter for May, which is doing well. He expects to branch out from Longwood as business grows enough to warrant it.” – Greenwood Gleaner.
March 1901: “Ross Paulson, the enterprising creamery man of Granton, was in town the first of this week, while on his way to and from Longwood. He has been busy getting ready to run the Longwood Creamery for this summer. Paulson reports that the prospect for a good business year is very bright. Frank Zetsche and Paulson will run the Greenwood Creamery as partners.”
A skimming station for separating cream from milk for butter making was established one-fourth mile east of the general store. (in south York, sec 34) A fire destroyed the skimming station in 1904 while it was owned by Ross Paulson.
“Another renowned horseman was Ross Paulson of the Granton area. At about the turn of the century, Paulson would often be seen whizzing over the roads, holding the lines to his perfectly matched buckskin team, making perhaps ten miles per hour. Watching him pass by would bring a smile to the faces of his neighbors. In Paulson’s courting years, he would be headed toward Christie, going to the Delos Raymond house, where he would call upon a pretty maiden, Maude Raymond. Adorned in her Sunday best, she climbed up into Paulson’s canopy top buggy; seated next to him, they would travel behind the handsome buckskin team down the road to Neillsville at a fast clip. Miss Raymond became Paulson’s wife eventually. Paulson operated a creamery at Granton and became addicted to horse. In 1905, he sold the creamery business, to concentrate on horses. For eighteen years, he worked at buying, selling and trading horses. During those years, he learned a great deal about horses through various experiences, wearing scars from being bit or kicked upon surprise attacks. When Hwy. 10 was constructed west of Neillsville in the early ‘30s, Paulson had a contract on its construction, clearing and grading 9.9 miles of the roadway. It rained nearly every day, which made working conditions bad for the 60 horses he used on the job and for WPA workers, as well. After the seven year stint of road construction, Paulson gave up to make way for the machine age. He returned to the selling and buying of horses until the demand of horseflesh waned and he quit that, too. So, for nearly fifty years, he had enjoyed his work with horses.” History

POPPE, Albert (14 Dec 1872 – 29 Aug 1932)
The remains of Albert Poppe were brought here (Owen) Wednesday from Interwald. Funeral services were conducted from the Congregational Church and burial took place in Riverside Cemetery. He was born 14 December 1872 in Poole, Mornington Township, Perth Co, Ontario.Albert was about 6' tall and fair complexion. The area men considered him to be an excellent hunter with a gun or bow and arrow as he could shot and hit most game at any distance. “Albert died on Monday the 29th of August, 1932 in Greenwood Township, Taylor Co, at the age of 29 years, 8 months and 16 days old. Roy, his son, became worried when his father hadn't returned from hunting and it was getting late in the day. It is believed that Albert, while hunting in the woods, tripped over a wire fence and his gun went off killing him. Now, something interesting but may not be fact; hand written in the (Poppe) book by a cousin of mine it says " Also evidence of suicide. Carried a gun to many years to have an accident like that. Also gave brother Charlie important papers several days before is death".
Albert, like the rest of the family, worked in the woods during the winters and helped his father farm in the summer. He eventually ran his own lumber camps and continued this kind of work most of his life. Mr. Poppe was, a number of years ago, a resident of Owen, and for many years was a logging jobber, having contracts with the John S. Owen Lumber Co. for several years. The camps were located in the Clark Co area of Wisc and around the town of Donald in Taylor Co, which is located along the Yellow River. Edna, his wife was the camp's cook and their children helped her out with the camp chores. There were two bunk houses that held about 100 men, sleeping two to a bed. The mail went out once a week, by horse and sleigh, to the town of Hanabal, Taylor Co, Wisc. Albert had a reputation for being a good camp boss and that his camps were clean, had good food and good pay. He had no trouble getting the area men to work for him. Albert was also known for being a good farmer and for his love of horses. In 1921 or 1922, he has his finger cut off accidentally while in Owen and since there was no hospital in the town he traveled to the hospital in Wausau, Marathon Co, Wisc.
Albert married Edna Belle Timblin the 26th of Dec 1902 in Butler Township, Clark Co. Edna was the daughter of William and Mary Jane (Smith) Thimblin from Thorp, Wisc. She was born in Daquscahonda, Elk Co, Penn the 20th of Mar 1880. Edna remarried after Albert’s death to Albert Barlow. Edna died in Cadott 8 July 1960 and is buried in Brooklawn Cemetery, Cadott, WI.
