Harrington, L. J.
L. J. Harrington was born on a farm near Waupaca and moved his family to
Abbotsford about 1905. He established the Fashion livery, having the best
horse, buggies, and cutters, in which he took great pride.
A year later, he purchased a Ford car from the Wells & Chase agency at
Dorchester, one of the first cars to be seen in this locality. His livery stable
had its own water system, supplied by a fifty-barrel tank on the third floor of
the building. One man was kept busy washing cars and buggies, as many of the
people of the town took advantage of the water supply.
“L. J.”, as he was called by most of his friends, served several terms as
president of the village and on the county board at Neillsville.
The Harrington’s had four children: Harold, Clifford, Roswell H., and Thornton.
Roswell, Art Franz, Herbert Boos, Clyde Wilson, and Robert Johnston had a great
basketball team at the Abbotsford High School; one of the best in this part of
the country.
Some years after the railroad division moved from Abbotsford, L. J. Harrington
sold his Fashion livery and entered the real estate business at Cadott and
Cornell. He took an active part in buying up some of the land which is now the Wissota dam at Chippewa Falls.
