Joseph Bernard McCabe, born May 16, 1860 in Neenah, Wis., came from the county
of Monahan, Ireland. As a young man, he learned the Cooper’s trade.
Later, he went to work for the Wisconsin Central Railroad as a fireman, then as
a locomotive engineer.
In 1883, he married Lena Louisa Leuth, and in 1889, transferred to the northern
division of the railroad, moving his family to Abbotsford in 1891.
There were five children in the family:
Charlotte, Jane, Bernard Charles, Felix
William, Raphaella Catherine, and Robert Emmett.
McCabe retired in May 1925, and died in 1946. His wife died in 1939.
Mr. and Mrs. McCabe were charter members of the Catholic Church. The local
congregation is named after their son, Bernard Charles, who died early in life.
