Hilltop School Retirement
Mayville Township, Clark Co., Wisconsin
In 1954 the country schools in the Town of Mayville were consolidated with the Dorchester School District. That fall, the 7th and 8th grade students from Hilltop School went to school in Dorchester. Hilltop School continued to function for three more years--teaching grades 1 through 6--and then closed permanently at the end of the school year in 1958. On March 22, 1960 (according to my mother's diary) Hilltop School was moved to the Clem Heindl farm (a mile directly south of its prior location) where it was used for many years as a grain shed. This is a picture of it after it had been moved. The side with the windows used to face east when it was a school.
