Hart's Red & White Food Store

The Hart Grocery Store was owned by Roy and Erma (Dignin) Hart. Following his graduation their son, Gerald, worked as a butcher there. November 5, 1938, it was sold to Henry E. Laffe and transfer included the building, fixtures and all Stock. The association with the Red and White Corporation was included in the transaction. Under the ownership of the Hart's, the store became one of the most popular trading places in the Mentor area. |

The "Red & White Food Store" was owned by Henry E. Laffe, the son of George and Lizzie (Eisenhart), early settlers in the Humbird area. Customers could call in their orders for home delivery. Red & White, like IGA, was a franchise/co-op chain which dated back to the early 1920s. The stores were independently-owned member stores throughout the USA which joined in an attempt to compete with prices offered at traditional chains like Safeway and A&P. As you can see from the advertisements above, they offered their own store labels as well as name brands and carried a wide range of items. Eventually, its stores were more likely to be found in small towns, such as this one in Humbird, Wisconsin. Quite often, they were often the only supermarket in the vicinity. |

| The Tritsch Grocery began as a general store in the 1880's when Edward A. Freeman and Isaac Cross formed a partnership and opened for business. In 1887, the store was sold to F. A. Shute and B. J. Stallard and moved to Centralia, WA. Edward Freeman was born in Valparaiso, Indiana. After his death, his remains were buried in the Mentor Twp. Cemetery. By the 1940s, the store was occupied by Frank Tritsch and became known as "Tritsch's". Frank's two sons eventually operated the store. |
