How I love this picture! My husband, Frank Barkley Moore was born at Humbird in 1933 to Mabel Barkley and Frank E Moore of Garden Valley. Frank Sr. was valedictorian of his graduating class at Humbird. Mabel's parents were George Barkley who was the local blacksmith, and her mother was Minnie Schumacher, daughter of John and Maria Alwardt Schumacher, Prussian immigrants in 1869 who moved all of their family from Watertown to Humbird where they purchased a farm. I'm currently writing a story on the family, and seeing this, wonder where George's blacksmith shop was. My husband died 30 years ago, then working as the school administrator for Brillion, Wisconsin. How he would have loved doing this.
In searching the Clark county website for myself at Owen and now Humbird, I congratulate all who are involved. Few counties in Wisconsin have done such a good job. I've been working with those in La Crosse and Richland counties for several years and am thrilled at the wonderful work being done. If anyone knows of the location of the Barkley blacksmith shop and if it might be in this picture, I would love to find out about it. Carol Mathewson Moore
