The log piles at the various mills are beginning to loom up.

Lumbermen report that there is good eighteen inches of snow in the woods about here.

Don't fail to attend the temperance lecture at the Methodist church next Monday evening.

Clifford's Mill was stopped for a few days last week by the breaking of the union belt. A new one arrived Monday and they started up in the afternoon.

Mr. Bartelts, of Colby, agent for the Wis. Central Railroad lands, was in town last Friday on business connect with his agency, and made the Advance office a friendly call.

Job Printing of all kinds will be done neatly and as cheaply by us as can be done anywhere outside of the large cities. Call and examine our specimens and prices and judge for yourselves.

Apologies are poor substitutes for what ought to be done; but when people understand the work, care and anxiety incident to starting a new paper, they will overlook any defeats that may appear in this issue.

We thought at first that there was something peculiar about the heading to this paper, but finally concluded that it was all in our eye. Well, we ordered a new heading from the electrotype foundry, but it did not come in time for this week's issue and we were obliged to fall back to our own recourses--but we were not going to fail in getting out the paper to please any type foundry.

Our friends are cordially invited to call and see us whenever it is convenient for them to do so. To one who has never seen anything of the "black art," a printing office is quite a curiosity; but we ask as a favor, that all who call will not handle the type. To children especially the temptation is strong to take up the type and see how it looks, but in so doing they may create a confusion that will require hours to repair.

A Donation and Oyster Supper for the benefit of Rev. J. P. Greer, will be held at the Methodist church next Wednesday evening, Jan 26th. Supper will be ready at 7 o'clock, so you need not take supper at home, but go from work or business right to the church. Supper tickets $1.00 per couple. Don't forget the time.

J. N. Phillips, the Grand Chief of the Temple of Honor in Wisconsin, will address the people of this place on the subject of temperance, next Monday evening, the 24th inst.

We need a wagon shop and a harness maker in Spencer and it is our deliberate opinion that both would do well if once established here. There is a vast amount of repairing, especially in winter, that would naturally go to a wagon shop, and the large number of teams employed in the lumber business necessitates a large quantity of harness work, especially in repairs.
