Tuesday, 23 Sept. 2008 ----Shannon, Howard J. (25 Oct. 1929 – 20 Sept. 2008) ABBOTSFORD -- Howard J. "Bud" Shannon, 78, of the town of Hull in Marathon County, passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at his residence. Tentative funeral services for Howard will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford. The Rev. Kenneth A. Dix will officiate. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home in Abbotsford. Committal services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, in St. Athanasius Cemetery in Jesup, Iowa, with military honors provided. Howard was born Oct. 25, 1929, in Fairbank, Iowa, to Paul and Alta (Ohl) Shannon. He attended a country school in Buchanan County, Iowa, until the eighth grade. After that he continued to help with the farming chores on his father's farm. On Nov. 25, 1952, Howard entered the Army and served his country in the Korean War. He was assigned to an engineering division during the war and worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was honorably discharge from the Army on Sept. 15, 1954. On Oct. 25, 1955, he married Rosalyn Zieser in Independence, Iowa. After his marriage to Rosalyn, Howard returned to farming in Iowa and raised their family there. He was also employed at John Deere Manufacturing located in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1976, they moved to the town of Hull in Marathon County where he continued to farm until his retirement in 2001. Earlier in life, Howard enjoyed play piano and working on car motors. Later in life, Howard enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and occasionally loved to gamble and give "lady Luck" a try at the various casinos. Howard is survived by his former wife, Rosalyn of Unity; his children, Timothy (Nancy) Shannon of Colby, Brian (Jenny) Shannon of Independence, Iowa, Maureen (Jack) Graff of Stetsonville, Laureen (Darrell) Underwood of Colby, Jeffrey (Jessica) Shannon of Colby and Peter Shannon of Colby; eight grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Howard is further survived by his siblings, Alice Brown of Independence, Iowa, Helen Welsh of Brandon, Iowa, Betty Lenihan of Princeton, Ill., Cecil Shannon of Oelwein, Iowa, Clarence (Alice) Shannon of Fairbank, Iowa, Leroy (Bertha) Shannon of Independence, Iowa, and Joyce (Arnie) Leininger of Waterloo, Iowa. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
