Surveying
Introduction --"The Acquisition of Public Land"
Use “The Acquisition of Public Lands” to locate an ancestor’s land patent in the
general land office records. Select Wisconsin as state, then enter the
ancestor’s name into the blanks. Or use the first landowners database below to
determine the township, range, and section to be entered.
Once the page for that record opens there will be three tabs at the top of the
page. The window opens in the left tab, showing the details of the patent,
including the land office and type of patent. Selecting the middle tab will open
a PDF image of the original land patent. The right tab opens a list of land
descriptions for neighboring landowners.
Be aware that the general land office records only have FIRST landowners. If
the land is resold the new owners will not be found in these records. County
deeds offices, abstract companies, and plat maps may be used to track the
ownership changes.

This interactive map of Wisconsin is searchable by county. Click on the
county of interest and a county map will open, showing all the township and
ranges. Click on the township of interest and a page will open showing all
the digital images available for that township, including sketch maps, plat
maps, exterior and interior field notes. If you do not have a surveying
background it would be helpful to read the Land Survey Information,
particularly “How the Work was Done”, at
