Matthew Paul Mathias, 20, Medford, died Sunday, Aug. 17 as a result of injuries sustained when he was struck by a vehicle.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stetsonville, with Father Frederick Brost officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood, Mich.

 

Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:30 until the time of the service.

 

Matthew Mathias was born April 4, 1988 in St. Paul, Minn., to Paul Lawrence and Mary Beth (Gayan) Mathias. The family moved to Butternut in 1993 where he attended kindergarten at St. Anthony's Catholic Grade School. He then attended Butternut Elementary School. In 2002 the family moved to Montreal and he graduated from Hurley High School in 2007. He moved to Medford in May 2008 to live with his father. He had been employed by Highline Corp. and most recently by MTA Communications in Medford.

 

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was also a server, serving his last mass on Sunday, Aug. 17. He was also a member of Teens for Life, Schoenstatt and Holy Rosary Youth Group.

 

He was active in basketball and football, and was an exuberant fan, always cheering on his favorite teams, the Hurley Midgets and the Green Bay Packers. A very special moment in his life was the year he was voted homecoming king at Hurley High School.

 

Survivors include his father, Paul L. (Jacqueline) of Medford; his mother Mary Beth Mathias of Montreal; two sisters, Rebecca and Elizabeth of Montreal; a brother, David of Montreal; a half brother, Paul Lawrence Mathias II of Medford; a stepsister, Andrea Duarte of Medford; two stepbrothers, Andres and Brandon Duarte of St. Paul, Minn.; paternal grandparents, Glenn and Darlene Mathias of Rib Lake; numerous aunts and uncles; cousins; and other relatives and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Leo and Lois Gayan.

 

Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
