First Generation

1. Jacob1 Rossmann, son of Ludwig Rossmann and Louisa Catharina Ebling, was born in Nierstein, Rheinhessen, Germany June 29, 1834.

He married Katharina Gessert in Tn. Rhine, Sheboygan Co., Wis., December 26, 1856. - married by Renatus Erbe in a ministerial ceremony in Tn Rhine, Sheboygan Co, WI

Katharina was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany March 15, 1838. She was the daughter of Valentin Gessert and Judith Gessert. Katharina died August 18, 1919 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 81 years of age. OBITUARY - CLARK COUNTY REPUBLICAN & PRESS (Neillsville, Wis.) 08/21/1919

Mrs. Katherine Rossman, one of the oldest residents of Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., died at her home in this city Monday, Aug. 18, 1919.

She was born in Germany March 15, 1838, and came to this country when a girl of thirteen.

She was married to Jacob Rossman Dec. 25, 1856, and in 1871 they came to Neillsville, which has been her home ever since. Mr. Rossman died in 1886.

To them were born eight sons and two daughters, of who only two sons survive: George P. Rossman, of Seattle, Wash., and Fred A. Rossman, of this city. She leaves also 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Rossman was a woman who in her quiet way did many kindly deeds for many people. In her home were gathered not only her children and grandchildren, as from tiem to time they came to her for comfort and motherly care, but in her home many a stranger and those seeking for a transient rooming place, four beneath her roof the painstaking care and interest in their welfare which made it a real home for them. She died well her work, although in the death of her husband and children, she had seen much of life's sorrows.

The funeral will be held today (Thursday) at 2 o'clock at the house, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating.

Clark Co. death record - vol. 9, page 27 Catherine Rossman - died 18. Aug. 1919, born in Germany on 15. March 1838 - parents names not given; she was age 81/5/3 and died in Neillsville.

Jacob died May 18, 1886 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 51 years of age. Buried in Neillsville Cemetery. OBITUARY - REPUBLICAN AND PRESS, Neillsville, Wis. 13. May 1886. page three:

Jacob Rossman is very low at present, but it is hoped he will soon be around again. His brothers, Paul and Phillip, of Beaver, Louis of Fifield, and John of Berlin, were here to visit him last week. His son George was also here from Ashland.

Republican and Press, Neillsville, Wis. 20. May 1886. page three: DIED. ROSSMAN - In this city, May 18, of consumption, Mr. Jacob Rossman, aged 52 years. Mr. Rossman was born in Nierstein, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany, June 29, 1834; emigrated with his parents to America in 1851, and settled in Sheboygan county, Wisconsin. Was married in Sheboygan Co. to his wife, Catherine Gessert, Dec. 25, 1856, where they resided until August, 1874, when he removed to this place and bought the hotel property which he named after himself, "The Rossman House," which he kept successfully until he sold to Wm. Sohn. Since that time he has kept a saloon on Main street, in this city. Deceased was elected sheriff of Clark Co., and served his two years from January lst, 1875, to January 1, 1877, satisfactorily. He had 10 children with his wife, of whom 6 are living, 5 sons and one daughter. He was sick about two years, and died May 18, 1886, a few minutes after 12 M. The funeral takes place Friday, May 21, at 2 p.m., at the Court House, Rev. W.T. Hendren officiating.

Jacob Rossmann and Katharina Gessert had the following children:

2 i. Louis Jacob2 Rossmann was born in Tn. Rhine, Sheboygan Co., Wis. December 26, 1857. He married Adelgunde H. Groger in Clark Co., Wis., August 1, 1882. Louis died September 7, 1888 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 30 years of age.

OBITUATY - REPUBLICAN AND PRESS, Neillsville, Wis. 13. September 1888:

DIED. ROSSMAN - At his residence in this city, Friday night last, Louis J. Rossman, in his 31st year. Louis Rossman was born in Sheboygan county Dec. 25, 1857, but lived here from his boyhood. He was an honest, generous hearted young man. He had been a sufferer with a complication of diseases for some time, and had sought medical aid both here and in Milwaukee and Chicago, but without avail. He leaves a wife and two young children to mourn his loss. He was a member of the A.O.U.W., under whose auspices his funeral took place Tuesday, Rev. W.T. Hendren preaching the sermon.

+ 4 iii. Frederich Adolph Rossmann was born July 4, 1862 and died October 24, 1948.

5 iv. Louise Catherine Rossmann was born in Tn. Rhine, Sheboygan Co., Wis. March 16, 1865.

Louise died November 13, 1881 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 16 years of age.

DIED. ROSSMAN - In this village, Sunday, November 13, 1881, Katie, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rossman, aged 17/7/28. This is the third death in Mr. Rossman's family since the opening of 1881. Katie Rossman was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and school mates. She lingered long with that most deceitful disease, consumption. Her funeral was held from the Presbyterian church of this village on Wednesday last. A large concourse of people manifested their deep sympathy on that solemn occasion.

6 v. Julius J, Rossmann was born in Glenbeulah, Sheboygan Co., Wis. June 6, 1866.

He married Lillian Smith in Clark Co., Wis., June 18, 1890.

Julius died March 28, 1913 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 46 years of age. Clark Co

Death of Jule Rossman. Julius J. Rossman died last Friday at the home of his mother, Mrs. Catherine Rossman. He was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rossman at Glenbeulah, Wis., on June 6, 1866, and came with his parents to this city in 1871. He resided here for about fifteen years and then went to Madison where he lived for a number of years and also resided at Minneapolis for some time. His father died in 1886 and at the time of his death Jule was one of the three surviving brothers out of a family of ten boys and girls. Deceased is survived by his mother, and brothers, George P. of Seattle and Fred of Loyal. Jule was a whole-souled, free-hearted man and he has a host of friends here who will remember him for the better qualities he possessed. The funeral was held at the house Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Risser officiating, and interment was made in the Neillsville cemetery.

+ 7 vi. Amelia Rossmann was born 1868 and died April 27, 1891.

+ 8 vii. Emil William Rossmann was born February 11, 1871 and died March 12, 1902.

9 viii. Andrew Otto Rossmann was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin 1873. Andrew died December 8, 1874 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 1 year of age. Buried Neilsville Cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rossman have been called to mourn the death of their baby boy, Andrew OTTO, aged one year and eight months, which sad event occurred yesterday. The loss is to those who stay, not to those who go. To the blessed little ones it is but going in the morning - a bright and beautiful morning. Life's burdens and troubles are not for them. Funeral at the M.E. Church next Monday, at 10 A.M.

Second Generation

George P.2 Rossmann (Jacob1) was born in Sheboygan Co., Wis. August 14, 1859. George died in Seattle, Washington.

He married Lillie Baker in Wisconsin, 1881. Lillie was born in Wisconsin November 1860.

George P. Rossmann and Lillie Baker had the following children:

12 i. Wayne3 Rossman was born in Wisconsin February 1882.

He married Sadie Rossman in Washington, 1909 ?.

13 ii. Robert R. Rossman was born in Wisconsin January 1886.

He married Clydie Rossman.

14 iii. Lyle B. Rossman was born in Wisconsin June 1887.

He married Blanche Rossman 1908 ?. Blanche was born in Michigan 1888 ?.

15 iv. George H. Rossman was born in Michigan August 22, 1895.

He married Goldie Rossman 1911 ?. Goldie was born 1895.

George died January 1973 in Seattle, Washington, at 77 years of age.

 

Frederich Adolph2 Rossmann (Jacob1) was born in Plymouth, Wis. July 4, 1862. His info. from 1870 census, Tn. Rhine.

He married Caroline Kunz in Marshfield, Wis., April 15, 1880

Caroline was born in Jefferson, Wis. August 7, 1861. She was the daughter of Abraham Kunz. Caroline died May 2, 1945 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 83 years of age.

OBITUARY - THE CLARK COUNTY PRESS, 10. May 1945, page 5 Mrs. Carrie Rossman, whose death occurred May 2, at her home in Neillsville, had been a resident of this community for many years. She was born Carrie Kunz 7. Aug. 1861 at Jefferson, Wis. and came as a young woman, to Marshfield, where she taught school for several years. On April 15, 1879, she was married to Fred A. Rossmann at Marshfield to Fred A. Rossman, and they came to Neillsville to live. Later in life, they lived a few years at Loyal, and returned to Neillsville in 1919. Mr. Rossman became Chief of Police in Neillsville in 1923, and retired only recently. Mr. and Mrs. Rossman celebrated their sixieth wedding aniversary in 1939 , and their sixty-sixth anniversary only a few weeks ago. Nine of their twelve children survive. Mrs. Rossman was the last surviving member of her father's family, and Mr. Rossman in the last surviving member of his father's family. Funeral services for Mrs. Rossmanwere conducted at the Jaster Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, May5, the Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery. Relatives from out of town who were here for the funeral services included: Mr. & Mrs. Fred Rossman, Jr., Eau Claire; Oscar Rossman, Mr. & Mrs. William Rossman and Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Gibson, Waukesha; Melvin Nelson and daughter, Marion; and Mr. & Mrs. William Shumway, Orfordville; Mrs. Donald Rossman, Milwaukee; Mr. & Mrs. Kelly Amato, Berwyn, Ill; Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Rossman, Havre, Montana; Mrs. Melvin Nelson was caring for her mother at the time of her death.

Frederich died October 24, 1948 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 86 years of age.

Fred A. Rossman died Sunday 24. Oct. 1948 in his Neillsville apartment. Funeral arrangements were made for Tuesday at 2:00 o'clock in the Georgas Funeral Home. Burial took place in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Mr. Rossman was born in Plymouth, Wis. in 1862. He came to Clark Co. with his parents when he was eight, and was educated in rural schools. His parents lived in Neillsville foir a time, and then in Loyal. Mr. Rossman returned to Neillsville in 1880, the same year he married Miss Caroline Kuntz, of Marshfield. He worked for a while for Herman Yahnke, doing delivery work. He joined the city police force in 1924, worked as a policeman for five years and as Chief for 15 years, retiring from active duty in 1944. He was a member of the Odd Fellows for 21 years, and was also a member of the Moose Lodge. His wife died in May 1945. Survived by nine children: Fred A. Jr. of Altoona Oscar of California Mrs. William (Alta) Shumway of Beloit Mrs. Milton (Nina) Hoidal of Kalispell, Mont. Ernest of Havre, Mont. Mrs. Melvin (Katie) Nelson of Orfordville Mrs. Kelley (Berdine) Amato of Berwyn, Ill. Donald of Seattle, Wash. and Floyd of Neillsville. Three sons, Leo, Irving and Harry predeceased him, as did his four brothers and two sisters. Twenty five grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren survive him.

She married Milton Hoidal.

17 ii. Alta Rossmann was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin.

She married William Shumway. William was born in Wisconsin January 18, 1886. William died December 1968 in Los Angeles, California, at 82 years of age.

18 iii. Frederick Adolph Rossmann Jr. was born in Marshfield, Wis. May 1880.

He married Lena Miller in Clark Co., Wis., November 26, 1899

19 iv. Oscar Rossmann was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin November 1, 1883.

He married Dollie Vanderhoop in Clark Co., Wis., November 30, 1904. Oscar died May 1977 in Napa, CA, at 93 years of age

20 v. Leo Rossmann was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin 1887. Leo died April 27, 1889 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 1 year of age.

OBITUARY - REPUBLICAN AND PRESS, Neillsville, Wis. 27. April 1889. page one:

Last Tuesday morning, at 3 o'clock Leo, aged about two years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rossman, died of membranous croup. Leo was a bright little fellow and the pride of his parents. He had been ailing but a short time, and nothing serious was thought of it up to the hour of his death.

23 viii. Katie M. Rossmann was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin November 28, 1894. She married Melvin Nelson in Wisconsin. Melvin was born February 21, 1889. Melvin died October 1967 in Orfordville, Rock Co., Wis., at 78 years of age. Katie died August 13, 1988 in Kokomo, IN, at 93 years of age

24 ix. Birdine Rossmann was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin June 2, 1896 She married Kelly Amato. Kelly was born December 14, 1919. Kelly died April 1981 in Berwyn, Illinois, at 61 years of age.

Birdine died May 1975 in Berwyn, Illinois, at 78 years of age

25 x. Harry Rossmann was born in Clark Co., Wis. January 10, 1899. He married Irma Neverman.

Harry died October 21, 1941 in Madison, Wisconsin, at 42 years of age.

OBITUARY - THE CLARK COUNTY PRESS, Neillsville, Wis. 23. October 1941. page seven:

Harry ROSSMAN. Harry Rossman, 43, of Waukesha, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rossman, Sr., Neillsville, passed away at the Wisconsin General hospital, Madison, Tuesday, October 21, having been ill for about three weeks. Mr. Rossman is survived by his wife, Irma (Neverman) Rossman, also formerly of Neillsville, two sons, Robert and William, and a daughter, June, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rossman, and by several brothers and sisters. The funeral will be held at Waukesha Saturday. Fred Rossman, Sr., and Fred Rossman, Jr., and his wife, Eau Claire, will attend the rites. Mrs. Fred Rossman, Sr., is not able, due to ill health, to make the trip.

26 xi. Donald Rossmann was born in Clark Co., Wis. June 20, 1902

Donald died January 1979 in Black River Falls, Jackson Co., Wis., at 76 years of age.

27 xii. Floyd Earl Rossmann was born in Clark Co., Wis. October 1, 1903. Floyd died July 1978 in Black River Falls, Jackson Co., Wis., at 74 years of age.

a. Amelia2 Rossmann (Jacob1) was born in Plymouth, Wis. 1868.

She married John G. Schmidt in Clark Co., Wis., June 2, 1888.

Amelia died April 27, 1891 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 22 years of age.

SCHMIDT - At her home in Neillsville, Wis., Monday, April 27th, 1891, Mrs. Amelia Schmidt, at the age of 23 years. This is one of the saddest deaths we have been called upon to report. Mrs. Schmidt was a lady in full vigor and health of womanhood but a few days ago, and her sudden death brings sadness to all her acquaintances. She leaves two children, one a child about two years of age, the other a baby about two weeks old. The bereaved husband, mother and brothers have the warmest sympathy of a large circle of friends of the departed. Funeral services at the Unitarian church yesterday.

30 iii. Walter Schmidt was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin April 2, 1891. Walter died December 18, 1891 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at less than one year of age. Buried Neillsville Cemetery.

b. Emil William2 Rossmann (Jacob1) was born in Plymouth, Wis. February 11, 1871.

He married Irene Frank in Clark Co., Wis., November 27, 1898.

Emil died March 12, 1902 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, at 31 years of age, of TB

Emil William Rossmann and Irene Frank had the following children:

31 i. Ruby Bertha3 Rossmann was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin June 4, 1899. Clark Co. Births. vol. 2, page 340, no. 138: Ruby Bertha Rossman, born 4. June 1899 in Neillsville, daughter of Emil and Irene C. (Frank) Rossman.

32 ii. Frank Emil Rossmann was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin December 2, 1900 Frank died September 5, 1992 in Sausalito, Marin Co., CA, at 91 years of age
