Highground’s Annual Spring Work Week Ahead

“Getting The Highground ready for summer”

Snow, sleet, rain and wind did not dampen over 200 volunteers’ spirits who came to work at The Highground last week for the annual Spring Work Week, readying the park the upcoming busy season.

A new awning was added to the Learning Center’s library entrance, trails were groomed, the handicap accessible tree house was washed, the Fountain of Tears received lighting and concrete was poured for three additional benches at the WWII Tribute and at the Korean Tribute for a bench/planter.  The Highground sign received a facelift and a new spot to be displayed.

The Highground was not able to finish some projects because of the inclement weather.  Some of those projects include planting flowers and outside painting. Those who have to help complete these projects, call The Highground at 715-743-4224.

Area businesses provided daily lunches for Highground volunteers, including Hardees, Pizza Hut, Subway, Cenex Heartland, Fannies, Olympic, Hansen’s IGA, Donna’s Cozy Kitchen, Apple Valley, Neillsville and Greenwood Kwik Trip, Neillsville BP, Marty’s Foodliner and Neillsville Country Club, Janice Ottman and the VVA Chapter 331 of River Falls donated chili for volunteers.  Of course, The Highground thanked the sweet ladies who baked bars and cookies and helped serve the food.

The Highground’s Fall Cleanup will be held Oct. 19 and Oct. 20. Those who could not make the work week and want to help, call 715-742-4224.  The 2012 Work Week is scheduled for April 25 through April 28.  Set some time aside in those busy schedules next spring and join the many volunteers helping make The Highground the country’s premier manned veterans park.

The Highground recognized all who helped. Volunteers and Contributors are the Heart of The Highground.  The Highground is a place for all.

The Highground’s annual Work Week held Wednesday, April 20, through Saturday, April 23, drew many volunteers.

Volunteers (l-r) Donald Flietner of Phillips, who served in the Korean War, Rick Hurtado of Waterloo, IA, who served in Vietnam, and Rick Meyers of Phillips, who also serve in Vietnam, all worked Thursday, April 21, to get the ground ready for new blacktop at a Highground parking lot.  Hurtado has helped at The Highground since the 1980s.  The Highground held its annual Work Week Wednesday, April 20, through Saturday, April 23.
