The Wreck of the Hesperus
(with apologies to the author)
It was the schooner Hoepner,
That sailed the Wittke (wintry) sea;
Anne the skipper had Turczyn (taken) his little
daughter,
To Beyer (bear) his company.
Blau (blue) were her eyes as the fairy-flax,
Her cheeks Gluck (like) the dawn of day,
And her bosom white as the Horswill (hawthorn) Bud's,
That Hope (ope) in the Marth (month) of ay.
The skipper Ringstad (he stood) beside the Hahm (helm.)
His pipe West (was) in his Mott (mouth),
And he watched how the veering flaw did blow
The smoke now Weast and now South.
Glenn (then) up and spake an old Stella (sailor),
Hunt (had) sailed the Savage (Spanish) main.
"I pray thee, Hopinkah (put into) yonder port,
For Ina (I) fear a Harry-cane."
