William Gregg Rice, great, great, great grandson of Margaret Ann Miller Flick who lived in Mentor Township, Clark County, WI from October, 1856 until shortly before her death in 1910, was my younger brother who had an interest in genealogy, as I did. Sadly, Bill died on August 28, 2010 after a long 2 year battle with A.L.L. (leukemia) at the age of 48. As the main family genealogist, I gathered all the data and Bill was planning to take all that information & put it into book form after he retired from his law career.
Bill was one of the most humble, non-pretentious men I ever met. His demeanor would not even suggest he was a trial attorney. He treated all people, rich or poor, intelligent or not so intelligent, social elites or the bum on a street corner, alike. He was known among Pennsylvania attorneys as the "only honest one" any of them knew. I figured that was saying something, when the family heard that over and over again at Bill's wake, from numerous attorneys and judges themselves. Bill was the consummate family man. He spent his free time mentoring his four daughters in all facets of life and Bill was deeply devoted to his wife, Janet. Bill was a deeply religious man, who valued his faith in God as a prize highly sought. We were brought up to respect & appreciate what our forefathers did for us as family & as Americans. Bill understood all that...well. Bill will be missed by many people, me included, as his oldest sister. He has left a great big hole in my heart. Bill was a terrific asset to society, but God chose to take him home early to heaven. We are sad for ourselves. Submitted 2011 by Sherrie Rice Smith |
