SPENCER – The post office at Riplinger, 9 miles northwest of Spencer, has been closed by order of the U. S. Postal Department and is now a rural branch being served by the Spencer Post Office, C. J. Neuenfeldt, local postmaster, announced today. Patrons of the Riplinger office, Neuenfeldt said, are now being served either as patrons of route 1, Spencer, 54479, or may still receive mail addressed to Riplinger as a rural station of the Spencer office. The postal department has installed a new self service unit in Lyons Store at Riplinger, complete with a stand – vending machine, postal scales and 24 key-type lock boxes, all of which have been rented to patrons wishing to receive their mail in this manner.
The former Riplinger Post Office was opened in 1916. At that time the community was known as Osborne, however since the state at that time had another community by the same name, Riplinger was chosen as a new name since the government declined to establish more than one post office in the state witj the same name.
The first postmaster was Fred Riplinger, now deceased, who held office from Feb. 3, 1916, until Nov. 30, 1946. Upon his retirement a daughter, Miss Hazel Riplinger was appointed acting postmaster until the appointment on Sept. 8, 1948 of William C. Domer. Domer retired Dec. 30, 1966. Since then Mrs. Diane Smutzler (Schmutzler) had charge of the office until its closing Aug. 11, 1967.
