This Regiment was organized at Camp Randall, Madison, Wisconsin in the fall of 1864. Company A left the State 10 October and was followed by Companies B, F, D, and C successively, Company C finally arriving in Nashville, Tennessee 30 November.

Subsequently the Regimental Companies who had remained in Wisconsin awaiting provisions and orders reached Nashville in February 1865.

The Regiment was engaged in post and guard duty until 9 March when it was ordered to Eastport, Mississippi to escort Union prisoners that were supposed to be turned over by Confederate General Forrest. However, they were not released, so the Regiment returned to Nashville and left on 3 April for Paducah, Kentucky where it remained on picket duty until 28 August when it was mustered out.

Its original strength was 877. Gained by recruits, 235; substitutes, 2; total, 1,114.

Loss by death, 57; desertion, 48, transfer, 121; discharge, 92; mustered out, 796.
