Group of Willard Boys Presented War Bonds by Committee
On Tuesday August 14th a War Bond was presented to Pfc. Tony Hribar as has been given to other overseas Veterans on a similar occasion.
On August 30th to Sgt. Don Hatton, veteran of our forces. Don is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Hatton of Eaton Township, which comprises the territory of the immediate Willard vicinity and the husband of Mary Hatton. Mary is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Podobnik of the same Township. Tony Hribar is the son of Mrs. Mary Hribar from Gorman and has served in the Infantry forces of our nation.
On Sept. 4th Cpl. Joe Schofield of the Town of Mead was also presented with a War Bond. He recently arrived from the Southwest Pacific area and has been in several major battles of that vicinity. All three veterans were pleased by the way the Committee and the Community greet our returning soldiers. We are glad to see them home. Several have been discharged from our fighting forces recently to take their place again in civilian life. Welcome Boys!
It had been decided to raise money for our revolving fund as the collections was the main source of Revenue for a long time, so a dance was agreed to be held at the West Side Hall on Sunday evening September 9th. It drew a large crowd. Five War Bonds were presented that night which makes a total of 11 for this report. The names are as follows: Sgt. Joe Ticer, European Theater of operations, Victor Musich of the same area. The other 3 were from the Southwest Pacific. They were: Sgt. George Plautz, who served our nation in the anti-aircraft unit; Albert Morrison, Infantry; and Joe Kocijan also of the infranty. At about 11 o’clock the boys were escorted to the stage and they were introduced to the people in behalf of the committee by Matt Malnar, Sec.-Treas. of the committee formed for said purposes. The speaker explained in detail about War Bonds (savings bonds now) and about the revolving fund the general purpose it accomplished.
He dealt on the subject that the veterans having fought so hard to bring the war to a successful conclusion should, together with all other people, work for a lasting peace the world security organization having laid the foundation at the San Francisco Conference. This should be given further moral support so that all aggressors can be curbed and all peace loving nations work together for the benefit of all mankind.
We wish to thank all contributors for their help in various ways. Tony Grum, the tavernkeeper at Greenwood, has donated very liberally for the dance and also for the general collection. Having only recently arrived and establishing himself in Greenwood he deserves your kind patronage. Joe Klune also proves he is a person of a very generous and kind nature and always willing to help for charitable or worthwhile causes. I think the general public knows and appreciates his winning ways. Frank Rajk has also made a nice contribution. Thanks a lot Frank. Hank Kelner our business man and friend of Greenwood also made a very nice donation. I know we and the people appreciate his kind generosity.
From Willard, the writer has donated for the dance as well as Frank Prebil and Joe Pekol. Chas. Perko gave us some merchandise. We thank all our business men and others. At the dance Frank Plautz and Joe Cerne assisted Aug. Bizjak, acted as constable and dance inspector. He donated his services free for the evening as well as all the others. Hank Lamovec, Frank Lamovec, Stanley Rajk and Aug. Podobnik also helped. Our members of the committee were very helpful, especially Tonhy Petkovsek. In the lunch room, Mrs. Frank Luzovec, Mrs. Martin Kirn, Mrs. Joe Plautz and Mrs. Tony Petkovsek served. We thank them for their assistance. We especially thank the orchestra, “The Goodtimers” for their free services, with the exception of little traveling expense. Also Eddie Olniczek of Thorp, who helped the good timers play. We also wish to thank Frank Gosar and the management of the West Side Hall for the use of the hall and the flag which was displayed on the occasion. Mrs. John Rautar for his assistance. Milton Boe and Harry Schlinsog, who made nice contributions. Also Dave Barr, who acted as auctioneer for some items sold.
The Laabs Dairy Co. at Willard, Mr. Leonard Rauen, manager, for donation of cheese and Miss Mary Lesar for her help. Mr. R.D. Ingham for his donation of ice and money contribution. Ray is the manager of the Rock Dam Resort. The Greenwood Gleaner, for the ad, which was also donated to us. Louie Horvat for merchandise donated.
Pfc. Willard Fratenburg of Tioga received a War Bond. He served with General Mark Clark’s fifth army in Italy as a member of the 1st Armored Division. Latest reports are that John Degoski is on his way home so a bond will be bought for him which will be comprised in this report. We had hopes of having the photos accompany this write-up but we never had the time as yet to do so, please excuse us. More veterans are coming home. We need a little more cash so let us hear from some more people to complete the job we started. May these acts of kindness promote a better feeling and unity and help to create a universal brotherhood of man. Let us all work for a lasting peace.
Matt Malnar, Sec. And Treas.
Just received word that John Vershay arrived home from the European Theater of operations. He is a veteran of the Belgium Bulge battle.
