The fifth grade from Thorp Elementary went to the Highground in Neillsville on Tuesday, October 2, 2007. One of the things we saw was a grass mound of a dove called the Effigy Mound. Each 5th grade student was asked to bring a small bag of earth to share. We all dumped our earth on the dove because they want our home to be there too. The thing that caught the eye of lots of students is the exact replica of the liberty bell. It had a crack and everything! The bell itself weighed a ton. The students got to ring the bell. The rope to pull and ring was red, white, and blue and could not touch the ground. Somebody drove the bell around for twenty years before it came to the Highground. One day an elderly woman visiting the Highground said that when she was in 8th grade she remembered ringing the bell. When it was about time to eat another veteran taught us about the flag. Another veteran was holding the flag folded in a triangle shape. Many kids asked why the flag was folded in a triangle, so the veterans explained it. Then, the veterans picked volunteers and those people got to help fold the flag. Those people should know how to fold a flag now! There is also a Fountain of Tears at the Highground. They made it for the families who suffered death in their families due to war. It is pretty and made of brass. The tear got bigger to smaller. They are planning to add more to the Fountain of Tears and we can’t wait to see it. We had a great time at the Highground and will always thank the veterans for serving! |
