100 Years Ago (1906)

Frank Switalski has traded his store and saloon property in Thorp to E Schneider for a 170-acre farm lying near Friendship, Adams County, WI.

Will M. Brintnall sold his confectionery business last week to Otto A. Klug of Milwaukee, who expects to move here and take possession next week.

Maurice Huls, of M Huls & Co. of Stanley, manufactures of seltzer, ginger ale, pop and a general line of soft drinks, was in town on his regular trip, supplying customers with his goods. In the course of but a few years this company has firmly established a business in that line that far exceeds their fondest dreams.

Many jobbers in the log hauling line stopped work last week owing to the poor sleighing.

John Collins and Capt. Collins of Indiana arrived here with their families and two carloads of household goods, farming tools and livestock. They have purchased eighty acres of land in the Town of Worden from the Lusk-Peterson Land Co., which they will occupy and improve.

75 Years Ago (1931)

The March 15 deadline draws near after which arrests will be made in Wisconsin for driving automobiles without 1931 license plates. The fine(s) for that is (are) $15 to $25 as the judge may determine and also an extra $2, which goes to the informer.

The heaviest snow fall during the present occurred when from four to five inches covered the bare ground before the storm was over.

Men’s Overalls, 220 weight denim 77¢ Grapefruit, 5 lbs. for 25¢ Rockwood Cocoa, ½ lb. boxes 29¢ Winesap Apples in bushel baskets at $1.98 per basket.

Beef Roast 16¢ lb.; Sirloin Steak 22¢ lb.; Spare Ribs 9¢ lb.; Veal Chops 18¢ lb.; Veal Breast 9¢.

A bill authorizing cities, village and towns to extend the payment of real estate taxes to June 1 was signed by Governor La Follette.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Richard Navarre, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Navarre of Thorp, and a first Philosophy student at Holy Cross Seminary, was chosen in the tryouts to portray Nicodemus in the production of the Passion Play, ‘The Betrayal’.

Pvt. Richard V. Swienton, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Swienton, Thorp, is scheduled to leave the U. S. for Germany with the 101st Airborne Division as part of Operation Gyroscope, the Army’s unit rotation plan.

The Clark County Medical Society has voted to request the State Board of Health to provide all vaccines available for use in anti-polio clinics for sixth and seventh grade students in the county.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Pope John Paul II greeted Chris McIntire, son of Mr. and Mrs. John McIntire, Thorp. McIntire is a first year theology student studying in the Vatican. He served Mass for the Pope, New Year’s Day in Rome.

Parvo Virus, a deadly virus that affects dogs, has apparently reached the Thorp area, according to Veterinarian, Dr. Ralph Stuesser.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Cindi Blecka and Tracy Alger, who are originally from Gilman, started the novel Revenge is My Name, published by Northwest Publishing back in February 1993 and had it accepted for publication the following August.
