100 Years Ago (1906)

Worden Wavelets – The Baldeschwiler saw mill has been put in operation for a few months run.

Track-laying on the Owen-Ladysmith railroad has been completed and the first train went through to Ladysmith last week.

Claus Kolpien succeeded in killing five fox near his home in the Town of Worden and will receive a bounty of $1 for each scalp.

Dr. Jos. Wiedemann, Dean, of Eau Claire, Rev. J. Wickert of Chippewa Falls, Rev. F. Byrne of Stanley and Rev. J. Wallace of Stevens Point assisted Father Douven in conducting services at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.

75 Years Ago (1931)

Rehearsals have been started under the direction of John Thielke of a home talent play to be put on under the auspices of the American Legion in the near future.

Geo. F. Becker just completed painting and decorating his hotel upstairs and downstairs, making his hotel one of the finest in the northern part of the state.

Walter S. Stocker moved to Erie, IL with his family. Mr. Stocker will make his future home there as he has purchased an interest in a large cheese factory, which will be operated by himself and Henry Possley of Watertown.

Starting April 1st, Ted Stroinski will deliver milk in the village of Thorp.

Sauerkraut, large cans 10¢ each; Limburger Cheese per pound 25¢, Summer Sausage per pound 19¢.

50 Years Ago (1956)

It might have been something like sort of a treat in strange circumstances when it was lightning and thundering plus snowing and blowing all at one time.

The imprint of a shoe, plus the discovery of the entire loot, solved the case of a store burglary here by a Thorp pair held in Chippewa County Jail on other charges.

Ralph Zimmerman, 23, a former resident of Thorp, died at Madison where he was a law student at University of Wisconsin.

Practically a 100 per cent cooperation of all Thorp businesses, have gone out for the Kiddies Easter Egg Hunt to be held in Thorp March 30th.

This year, Tornado Awareness Week will highlight the first state-wide tornado drill.

Ron Kodl, commander of the Thorp American Legion presented Tom Polnaszek and Joe Benzschawel with Diamond Jubilee Certificates from the National Organization of the American Legion for 60 years of continuous service in the legion.

Terry Maier and Cory Walters of Thorp High School have been nominated to receive the State Farmer Degree, the highest degree awarded by the Wisconsin Association of Future Farmers of America.

A first class letter now costs 18 cents to mail, up from 15 cents.

10 Years Ago (1996)

The United States Achievement academy announced that Kenarae Mertens has been named a United States National Award winner in English. This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain.
