100 Years Ago (1906)

Stanley Sunbeams—Carpenter & Mather have built a second story to the old Casterline hardware store, which they now open.

Herman Friess, who has been in North Dakota with his fast horses for three weeks past, reports the sale of his horse “Progressive League” for $800. This horse had won one race and on two other occasions had come in second. “Butcher Boy” has been sick and unable to enter the races.

75 Years Ago (1931)

Two of the 43 persons examined at the free chest clinic held at Thorp on July 7, by the Wisconsin Anti-Tuberculosis Association were placed in the Tuberculosis classification.

A hail, rain and windstorm did considerable damage to crops in this vicinity, Corn, oats, rye, hay, potatoes and peas suffered greatly by hail and laid flat on the ground.

L. P. Walsdorf was elected president of the newly organized Lions Club.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Ten members of the Thorp Lions Club were honored at the club’s 25th Anniversary Banquet held at the Thorp Finance dining room. Members who were charter members in 1931 included: John S. Bogumill, Francis J. Conway, L. E. Gruszynski, John J. Harycki, Ross Lawrence, Dr. W. F. Nolechek, Dr. G. A. Scief, L. P. Walsdorf, Wm. S. Wagner and Gordon A. Wolf.

Joseph F. Maurer, 55, Soo Line agent at Cadott since 1941, died at the Holy Family Hospital at New Richmond following a heart attack. He was on his annual vacation.

The eligible age group for use of polio vaccine has been extended from 0 through 14 years to 0 through 19 years of age.

Thorp Moose members will celebrate their 12th anniversary.

Leaving the Army July 31 will be Brig. Gen. Benjamin P. Heiser, a former Thorp resident, now deputy commanding general of Fort Carson, CO.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Dennis Melvin, Thorp City Clerk for the past five years, submitted his resignation to the city council effective August 14.

The first groundwater tests conducted at the site of the July 3 chemical spill three miles east of Thorp indicate that there was no chemical contamination according to a Dept. of Natural Resources spokesman.

The $5,000 boiler for the Thorp Municipal Swimming Pool donated by the Thorp Lions club arrived July 8.

Hot Jazz, Thorp’s vocal jazz ensemble will be representing the community as musical entertainment to celebrate Stanley’s Centennial after the parade July 18.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Marine Pvt., Jason R. Briski, son of Robert D. Briski of 100 W. Birch St., Thorp, WI, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego.

Hunters participating in the 1996 Wisconsin deer hunting seasons will this year have the option of filling all antlerless deer permits during any hunting season, archery, gun and muzzleloader.

Great traditional Southern Gospel Music is coming to this area! One of America’s fastest rising gospel groups “The Impacts” will be in concert at the Thorp High School on July 25 for a single performance.
