100 Years Ago (1906)

Chas. Case sold his restaurant business last week to G. W. Hoseley (Hoesly?) of Neillsville, who took possession on Saturday.

County Supt. of Schools, A. O. Rhea, is engaged in visiting the schools in this portion of the county.

Geo. Bushman went to New Richmond on Sunday last where he has secured a position as section foremen.

The party who purloined tools from the municipal power house is known and if same are (is) returned no questions will be asked.

75 Years Ago (1931)

F. M. Broeren has recently been appointed state cheese grader of the State of Wisconsin. Mr. Broeren will have charge of the territory in the vicinity of Marshfield.

Bellinger Square – Mr. and Mrs. M. Penk had the misfortune of losing their home and all other adjoining buildings by fire. Only the hay barn was left.

Roger Creek and Town Line – Lovers Lane is the new name applied to old Highway 29 between the Roger Creek crossing and the County Line.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Death hid in the fog for Mr. and Mrs. Beryl E. Hart, Thorp, who were instantly killed when their car smashed into the side of a freight train two miles south of Fairchild.

Aerial photos were taken of 52 farms in the area served by this newspaper and one picture will be published each week along with an invitation to readers to “guess whose farm.”

Participating aboard the destroyer USS Richard B. Anderson was Lawrence A. Olejniczak, fireman, USN, son of Mrs. Veronica Olejniczak of Thorp.

The bride, 73, cried a little and the groom, 92, beamed happily at the autumn wedding of Emma Vanderhoff and Peter Kessnich.

25 Years Ago (1981)

The first frost has hit Thorp. So much for the growing season and frost-free windshields in the morning!

Gene Oberle of Thorp was elected the president of the Wisconsin Association of County Veterans Service Commissions September 12, at the annual state convention of the association at the Wisconsin Veterans’ Home in King.

The Thorp Board of Education unanimously approved Monday, September 28, to present to district voters in November with an elementary school building plan, which calls for the construction of a kindergarten through fifth grade facility at the high school site.

Dennis Postler and Jennie Osowski reigned over the Thorp High 1981 Homecoming festivities as King and Queen.

10 Years Ago (1996)

After meeting the requirements set by the Boy Scouts of America, Jason Hull received his Eagle Award following an intensive Eagle Board of Review that was held on May 8, 1996.

King Mike Baehr and Queen Camille Brunett will reign over this year’s homecoming court made up of the following couples: Jeremy Olson and Heather Lipinski, Andy Woods and Katie Campbell, Gabe Swope and Heather Einhorn, and Bill Poppe and Laura Baures.
