100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – W. H. Kinney resigned the editorship of the Stanley Times last week and with Mrs. Kinney his wife left here on Saturday for Chicago where he will continue in the printing business. James Harris, a former resident of Stanley, has accepted the vacant editorship of the Times.

G. L. Hoesley has rented the building heretofore occupied by Peter Phillippi’s saloon and will operate a restaurant and hotel in the same.

A cooperative creamery started business at a point three miles south of Greenwood last week. The plant cost $2,800 and is owned by thirty farmers.

Peter Phillippi has purchased H. Friess’s interest in the meat market business, and in company with Jos. Sensenbrenner, the business will be continued at the old stand.

75 Years Ago (1932)

A Skat tournament will be staged at Thorp on Sunday afternoon and evening, February 7th.

February 8th and 9th, the Happy Boys’ Minstrel will be staged at the Rialto Theatre, Thorp.

Colored Venetian lace bolero jackets are a new note for evening wear.

Lublin Notes – A fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the Downer store early Wednesday morning.

Stanley, Thorp and Cornell won their Cloverbelt basketball games with the result that Stanley remains in first place, Thorp in second and Cornell rises to a tie with Owen for third and fourth.

50 Years Ago (1957)

A Thorp Telephone Co. employee survived a 72,000 volt shock when he brushed against a power line on a pole near the Soo Line Depot in Lublin. Jimmy Grabon fell on his back into a snow bank from 25 feet.

Nancy Lindquist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Lindquist of Thorp is now making a tour that will include 24 concerts in 10 different states with the St. Olaf Choir.

Television has changed since the days we viewed the old time English movies over WEAU with our 10-inch set. We know (now) watch them with a 24-inch set.

Howard Rabaska, Withee, escaped injury late last Wednesday when the truck he was driving collided broadside with a northbound Soo Line freight train on the Highway 29 crossing at Owen.

Ann Hedler has been named the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow in Thorp.

Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Chester Daines that their son, Robert V. Daines, graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy on Jan. 18, 1956 after four months training in the school.

25 Years Ago (1982)

The Harry Kubera residence sustained approximately $1,500 worth of damage from a fire January 31. The fire started as a chimney fire and advanced to a wall.

Seven Soviet Christians seeking help to immigrate to America in order to pursue their religious beliefs have found friends in Thorp.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Lana Wirtala, who has been the recipient of the Thorp Lioness Art Scholarship for the past three years, spoke at the Thorp Lioness meeting on January 9.

NSP workers are shown rebuilding sections of the substation south of Thorp. The work is expected to last several weeks and in the meantime power is being routed through a portable station.
