100 Years Ago (1907)

Ogurek Mill and Vicinity – Andrew Ogurek is preparing lumber for a nice new house.  The dimensions of which are 24x40 with 14 foot studs and a 7 foot basement.
 
The dwelling house of Elmer Douglas in the Town of Roosevelt was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning last.  No insurance.
 
Our townsman, A. O. Rhea, is a candidate for re-election as county superintendent of schools.
 
Money is getting so plentiful, locally, that some of our capitalists are at their wits end to loan their supply of ready cash.  Invest it in business and manufacturing enterprises, gentlemen, and you will not only return to the ten percent days but build up your town and surrounding country as well.  The farmers are setting an example by organizing a new butter factory and thus manufacturing their product all at home.  Will you take the hint?
 
75 Years Ago (1932)
 
H. C. Conklin, of Thorp, was elected Friday to head the new Clark County maple syrup producers’ organization, which was formed to find new markets for syrup.
 
The residence of Anton Baldeschwiler of the Town of Worden was badly damaged by fire and smoke on Saturday morning last. 
 
Bellinger Square – Due to the stormy weather last week, we all stayed indoors until the snow plows No.1 and 2 cleared the highway.  The snow was piled so high on the sides it looked as if one was going through a tunnel.
 
50 Years Ago (1957)
 
At a special meeting held Tuesday evening, the editor of The Courier was informed that the City Council has voted to meet with Mr. Mauer of the Lyman Lumber Co. on the consideration of the sale of the city hall-jail.
 
Friendly Neighbors – On March 14 we had rain, hail, thunder and lightning, the first for this year.  The electricity was off for 2 hours.
 
Four Taylor County men responded to the draft call recently.  The men who left on March 6 included: Melvin G. Tilch, Town of Greenwood; Edward D. Herman, Town of Ford; Joseph J. Courchaine, Town of Medford and Frank S. Sarafin, Town of Roosevelt.
 
25 Years Ago (1982)
 
The Thorp Cardinals took possession of the WIAA Class C Sectional Championship trophy in the Wausau West gymnasium after defeating Niagara 77-68 for the honor of a trip to Madison to compete in the State Tournament.
 
Bob Kotecki, a senior at Thorp High School, was a top vote-getter of the small school squad in the 81-82 Channel 7 boys’ basketball all stars.
 
10 Years Ago (1997)
 
Josh Korn recently competed in two prestigious cross country ski events.  His goal is to qualify for the Junior USSA Ski Team, which is comprised of the junior skiers in the Midwest.
