100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – Carpenter & Mather, hardware men, are about to dissolve partnership and the business will be continued by Mr. Mather.
 
Local Masons entertained E. J. Farr of Eau Claire, Grand Master of the Masonic Order of the State, at their lodge room on Friday evening last.  Grand Master Farr instituted Thorp Lodge No. 264, F. & A. M. on July 4, 1895.
 
Ground was broken on Saturday last for the new parochial school building to be erected by St. Barnard’s Catholic Congregation.
 
Friday, May 10th has been designated as Arbor Day by Gov. Davidson.
 
75 Years Ago (1932)
 
Louis Zukowski has begun excavating preparatory to the erection of his store and residence building on the site of the old building destroyed by fire some time ago, three miles east of the village.
 
A large number of baseball fans and players met at The Club last Thursday evening for the purpose of organizing a baseball club for the coming season.  The following officers were elected: President – Ray Smigaj; Secretary and Treasurer – Ray E. Schmitt; Grievance Committee – Ray Smigaj, Ray Schmitt and Al Boehm; Manager – Leon E. Bogumill; and Assistant Manager – Arnold Huls.
 
In previous years Thorp has been bothered by odors created by an inadequate sewage system, but with the installation of this modern sewage treatment plant, which if given proper care and attention, this nuisance will be eliminated.
 
50 Years Ago (1957)
 
Henry J. Pabich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pabich, local grocery store owner, was among a class of 32 who passed the Wisconsin Pharmacy examinations.
 
Five Clark County men were inducted into the Army April 3 at Minneapolis, MN and then assigned to basic training at Ft. Chaffee, AK: Allan R. Natzke, Thorp; Hilbert J. Martens, Greenwood; James E. Seufzer and Kenneth V. Kaucnik, Owen; and Frank R. Olszewski, Withee.
 
As the Hallanger Hotel prepares to close, two pioneers of Thorp will leave this community for rest homes at Neillsville and Greenwood.  J. D. Elmendorf, 94, will take up residence at the Rest Home in Greenwood and Wm. Courter, 85, will reside at a Neillsville Home.
 
25 Years Ago (1982)
 
The cost of having garbage picked up for residents of Thorp was increased to $4.65 per month from $4.00 at the Monday evening meeting of the Thorp City Council.
 
Clark County’s second 1982 traffic fatality was recorded following a head-on collision at about 1 a.m. Saturday near Colby.
 
10 Years Ago (1997)
 
Members of the 1997 Junior Prom Court are Gabe Swope, Richy Palms, Camille Brunett, Heather Einhorn, Jamie Polnaszek, Jesse Drost, Kaye Boyarski, Dan Eichman, Josh Kaczmarcik, Holly Grabowski, Vicki Jaskot, Chris Boden, Toni Gulcynski, Josh Rosemeyer, Bryan Larson, Jeremy Turner, Brooke Leech and Clint Klapatauskas.
 
Pete Asselin was given the key to the City of Thorp at Monday night’s city council meeting.  Mayor Justin Rosemeyer presented the key to Asselin in honor of his many years of service on the city council.
