100 Years Ago (1907)

Reseburg Ramblings – Wm. Black with his portable sawmill has been sawing lumber for Jos. Rempa the past week.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – Frank Burke has been appointed city clerk in place of Walter Miller who resigned.
 
Depot Agent H. A. Culler has relinquished his position as agent at the depot and John Philippi, who has been agent at Curtiss for some time past, is now in charge. 
 
For a period of thirty years past, or ever since the sturdy woodsman has been engaged in leveling the forests in this vicinity, strange tales of the vast mineral deposits have been told. To this end a number of businessmen of Thorp, Stanley, Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls met at Stanley on Saturday last and organized “The Jump River Copper and Mining Co.”
 
75 Years Ago (1932)
 
On Monday and Tuesday evenings, May 2 and 3, the Senior Class of Thorp High School presents “Charm School,” a comedy in three acts, at the Rialto Theatre.
 
The residence of Theo. Stroinski, located a short distance north of the village limits, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday evening of last week.

Neiman’s Corner – The roads are very bad in this vicinity and many cars are stalled in mud every day. A word to the wise: keep your car home until the roads dry up.
 
50 Years Ago (1957)
 
Thorp and area residents will turn their clocks ahead one hour this coming Saturday night as the state goes on daylight saving time for the first time since World War II.
 
Lola Biddle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Biddle, was named valedictorian of the Class of 1957 at Thorp High School.
 
Grade A Grassland Butter, 66˘ lb.; Half Gallon Clover Ice Cream, 89˘; Dolly Madison Cottage Cheese, 12 oz., 23˘/2 lbs. 45˘; Kraft Velveeta, 2 lbs. for 29˘.
 
25 Years Ago (1982)
 
Nolechek’s Meats of Thorp just returned from the annual convention of Wisconsin Meat Processors held in Oconomowoc with five grand champion awards.
 
The attendants for the 1981 Thorp High School Junior Prom are Tohru Tanaka, foreign exchange student, escorting Roseanne Ciolkosz, Kert Boie escorting Yvonne Van Ert, Steve Merlak escorting Debbie Orheim and Eric Zoromski escorting Rhonda Gerrits.
 
10 Years Ago (1997)
 
Seniors Laura Baures, Kariann Pajak and Kelli Klapatauskas achieved a perfect score and won gold medals in the recent state forensics competition.
 
Former Thorp Cardinal Football standout, Mike Maslowski, was picked as a free agent for the San Diego Chargers in last weekend’s draft.
 
Thorp has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. It is the fourth year Thorp has received this national recognition.
