100 Years Ago (1907)

Bobb’s Mill and Country ‘Round – The heavy wind, which struck this place Sunday evening, wrecked W. P. Randall’s barn.  Mr. Randall was caught beneath the falling roof and badly injured, his hip bone being shattered and other bruises.

Krasin Bros., contractors, have completed the new creamery building and the machinery is now being installed.

Call for Old Blue Ribbon, a straight whiskey, at Julia Rasmussen’s, sole agent.  A whiskey of quality for family use, guaranteed to conform with the national pure food law.

75 Years Ago (1932)

About 50 voters were present at the Annual Meeting of Joint School District No. 1 of the towns of Withee and Reseburg and the Village of Thorp, held at the school building.  R. G. Lawrence was re-elected director.  Only $10,000 was raised for the school.

Taft Township – G. Mueller’s barn was nearly destroyed by fire Thursday but with the quick help of neighbors the building was saved.

Neiman’s Corner – Sunny Lawn School held its annual meeting, July 11.  Edward Wojtkiewicz was elected director in place of Andrew Strzok.

Bobb’s Mill – At the annual meeting, Wm. Pagel was elected school clerk for three years and Arthur Bob director for one year.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Twenty-five tons of year-old hay and a hay barn measuring 30 by 160 feet in length were destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon at the Bill Krause Dairy Farm at Withee on Highway 29.

Among the seven novices invested with the garb of the Sisters of the Servants of Mary at Our Ladies of Sorrow Convent in Ladysmith on June 19th were Lois Reichert, Sister Mary Kateri and Loan Benzschawel, Sister Mary David.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Stanley Popowski was ordained Deacon by Bishop Elden F. Curtiss on June 27, 1982 at St. Bartholomew Parish, White Sulphur Springs, Montana.

On Wed. July 7, Casey Jaron, the postmaster at Lublin for 49 years was traveling south on Washington St. through Thorp when his car was struck broadside by a westbound Soo Line freight train at the intersection.  Jaron died instantly about 5:15 p.m. according to the investigating officers.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Dr. George Bogumill, formerly of Thorp, received much prestige at the Alumni Banquet held on Saturday, July 5th at the Quonset Hall.  In later years, Dr. Bogumill was given the opportunity to operate on two presidents.  With Secret Service gunmen in the room, Dr. Bogumill successfully operated on Ronald Reagan’s constricted finger and on George Bush, who had a lesion on his finger.
