100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – C. T. Casterline, the first mayor of Stanley, and now a resident of West Salem, WI, is here visiting his old friends.

Bobb’s’ Mill and Country’ Round – Three loads of wood have disappeared from Ernest Isler’s pile of wood on Chris Martin’s farm.

New post offices have been ordered established at Lublin and Polley, Taylor County.

While carrying a gun in the woods on Sunday last Ben McCarthy accidentally shot himself, the charge taking effect in his left foot making a painful wound.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Herman Tiedemann, our local game warden, rounds out twenty-five years this month, in the service of the state in capacity.

On Sunday afternoon and evening, November 20th, a number of students of St. Bernard’s Parochial School will present a drama in two acts and five scenes “Dolores” or “Through the Fires of Sorrow.”

Mr. Gruseck had the misfortune of losing his barn which was caused by a fire; also fifteen head of cattle, on Saturday morning.

50 Years Ago (1957)

A 10 inch snowfall riding out of the northwest on a howling, whipping wind, clobbered the Thorp area and the rest of this part of the state during Monday night and early Tuesday morning with traffic on the town and county highways and byways practically stalled to a slow walk.

For the first time in many years the U. S. mail dropped off here by the train was pushed down main street in the railroad wagon instead of being hauled by the truck.  No road open.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Mary Hedler of Stanley and Alvera Boie of Thorp received the Public Relations Award for doing outstanding work during 1982.

Receiving the honor of being the first hunter to register a deer at Jerry’s Sport Shop in Thorp on opening morning of the gun deer season was Casper Haas, Jr. of Thorp.

Some very industrious beavers took down a poplar tree along the Yellow River near Cadott, resulting in a power outage for twenty minutes in the Thorp and Stanley area on November 17.

Tom Kotecki, Thorp, a former UW-River Falls graduate, recently completed in Central States Bodybuilding Champion-ships.

10 Years Ago (1997)

In a time when small businesses come and go all too frequently, The Thorp Courier celebrates 115 years of continuous business.

There were five finalists in the Thorp City Flag Contest: 1st place, Ashley Pogodzinski; 2nd place, Brandon Ewer; 3rd place, Themba Hinke; 4th place Crystal Smart; and 5th place, Adam Westaby.
