100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – Rev. F. A. Byrne, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, is about to have a vacation, during which he will visit the Holy Land and other points of interest on the Mediterranean seaboard.

Messrs. B. Christmas and J. Brown of Loyal were in town yesterday inspecting the local electric light plant. The village of Loyal proposes to put in a new plant next spring.

Following are the officers of Thorp Lodge No. 264, F. and A. M. elected on Monday evening: W. M. – W. J. Frank; S. W. – Ernest Buss; J. W. – T. O. Mosher; Secretary – J. B. Bachman; Treasurer – Geo. Zillmann.

75 Years Ago (1932)

The Citizens State Bank of Stanley failed to open for business on Saturday last.

The tax rate for the village of Thorp for 1992 is .0283, which is much lower than the rate for 1931, which was .0345.

R. G. Lawrence, Thorp, is reviving interest in the Miller Dam project.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president in a Democratic landslide which included the Village of Thorp and surrounding townships.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Miss Patricia Maslowski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Maslowski, of the Town of Withee, who has been in nurse’s training at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield for the past three years, recently passed the state board examination at Madison and is now a registered nurse.

Robert Cattanach, local Northern States Power Co., manager, was elected president of the Thorp Volunteer Fire Department at their regular meeting held Monday evening at the fire hall here.

25 Years Ago (1982)

A Thorp woman, Elizabeth Budzinski Tieman, 37, was thrown from the car that she was driving on December 19.  She died of massive head and neck injuries and her two passengers in the car did not receive serious injuries.

Members of the Thorp Volunteer Fire Department responded to a chimney fire at the Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pszeniczny residence, located at 308 W. Hill St. in the city of Thorp.

The owner of the Cantina in Thorp received the Golden Butter Knife Award for using Real Dairy products in menu and meal preparation.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Thorp firefighters were called early Tuesday morning, December 9th, to put out a fire at Nolt’s Welding, located on CTH X east of Thorp.  The fire apparently had smoldered overnight making its way to the attic where it began to blaze.

Clark County Veterans Service Officer, Robert P. Reil, retires January 2, 1998 after thirteen years of service.
