100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – The veritable white deer, which was killed on the Jump last fall, has been stuffed and now ornaments the windows of a saloon at this place. – The Brown residence on Franklin St. between Carpenter and Stanley Streets caught fire from the inside on Saturday afternoon and was totally destroyed.

Jas. Heagle resigned his job as janitor at the school building last week and Thos. Dygart has accepted the position.

75 Years Ago (1933)

Hansman & Johnson and the Thorp Hardware Co. stores are keeping busy during the lull in business by repairing and remodeling.

The ground hog didn’t disappoint us this time.  It will take more than three months of summer to thaw out frozen ears, fingers and toes.

50 Years Ago (1958)

Stanley Malkowski of Thorp will be an announcer over WCHF radio station, Chippewa Falls, for a Thorp program featuring Polish music starting this Sunday and every Sunday from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Employees of the Fredrick Post Manufacturing Corporation, Owen, went on strike Monday morning Feb. 17.

The Farmers Oil Cooperative had the highest percentage on their quota of Ford tractor parts in 1957 under the Wis. Tractor & Equipment Co. of Fond du Lac, distributors.

25 Years Ago (1983)

Mr. Bill Petrusczak of Thorp will be sworn in as the new postmaster of the Lublin Post Office this Friday morning, March 4 at 11 a.m.

The Thorp FBLS Chapter is proud to announce that Francis J. Conway, founder of Thorp Finance Corporation, has been named FBLA Businessperson of the Year – 1983.

On Tuesday, March 15, the Thorp Jaycettes will be hosting “Bridal Memories”, an evening of memories and nostalgia and heirloom wedding garments – fifty years or older – collected from Thorp area families.

10 Years Ago (1998)

Thorp resident Steven Dus has been donating to the Thorp Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Department annually for twenty-five years.

Mrs. Marvin Piwoni, Gilman, was the winner of the big screen television given away in last week’s drawing at the Amoco and McDonald’s Express promotion.

Wetter than average soils and little snow cover this winter could spell trouble for the state’s alfalfa crop.
