100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – A bad case of diphtheria at the tannery is giving some alarm.

South Worden – Farmers have begun hauling in good earnest.  Everybody is busy doing something to make use of this fine sleighing.

Lewis Moore has completed his apprenticeship as telegraph operator at the local depot, and John Bolin, son of Thos. Bolin has taken up the work in his stead.

75 Years Ago (1933)

Roger Creek and Town Line – Capaul Bros. have discontinued their fur farm in West Worden but are still extensively engaged in the poultry business.

Butlerville Budgets – Most of the farmers of the community are getting ready to make maple syrup.

50 Years Ago (1958)

Thorp defeated Rib Lake 58 – 54 in a loosely officiated ball game at Marathon Saturday night to win the WIAA district championship and the right to play in the sectional at Menomonie this weekend.

James A. Reineke and Robert J. Mertens of Thorp were inducted into the Armed forces at the Minneapolis Induction Center March 6.

Mrs. Alice Thorsen Raether, 32, mother of four children, has been missing from her rural Thorp home since March 5.  Today all Wisconsin law enforcement points have been alerted.

25 Years Ago (1983)

A rural Owen woman, Cheryl Koehn, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of a car-pickup collision on Wednesday, March 9, at about noon.

A memorable moment in the lives of the Gilman girl’s basketball team of 1983 was captured as the team raised the Class Championship trophy for everyone to see as the jubilation on their faces is extended to the many fans, who shared in their win over Johnson Creek.

The body of an Illinois man, Kerry Kline, 23, of Glen Ellyn was found on Saturday, March 12 in the Eau Pleine River, three miles east of Abbotsford.

10 Years Ago (1998)

Workers have begun clean-up of a 3200 gallon gasoline spill as the Department of Natural Resources, state and local agencies investigate the accident that occurred in the City of Greenwood.

Thorp City Clerk Ellen Schmidt received a petition March 6, to place a Class A beer dales referendum before the voters this April election.  A petition signed by 91 voters was submitted to the city requesting a referendum that would allow the City of Thorp to issue Class A license for the retail sale of beer in original packages to be consumed away from the premises where sold.
