100 Years Ago (1908)

James McDonald of the Town of Tilden has decided to grow sugar beets on a large scale and has signed a contract for twenty acres for 1908.

The diphtheria scare has about run its course and unless new cases appear, the village and parochial schools will resume work on Monday next. One death, a girl three years of age, occurred on Thursday morning last, and one more child, a boy, is still ill with the disease.

75 Years ago (1933)

Roger Creek and Town Line – Roy Forster, is separating his milk and making butter from the cream. Something unusual in these days.

What appears to be an agreement on the minimum salary for rural school teachers in Wisconsin was disclosed the past week in the Senate where a bill was engrossed fixing the minimum salary at $65 per month for the next two years.

Jack Blazel, who is employed at the local cheese factory, moved his personal property here from Dorchester Saturday.

50 Years Ago (1958)

Bids on the proposed hospital addition were opened recently with the P. J. Miron construction Co., Appleton, low bidder on general construction, with a base bid of $292,977.

James A. Reineke and Robert J. Mertens, both of Thorp, were inducted into the armed services recently at Minneapolis, MN.

Joseph T. Tobola was a decisive winner in his bid for reelection in the Mayor’s race in a fairly good turnout at the poles although not as many as expected in Tuesday’s election.

25 Years Ago (1983)

The owners of Papierniak’s Dept. Store have entered into a contract with government for a new location for the post office in this village. The new building, to be constructed of brick and tile, will be erected adjoining the Dept. Store and as the contract specifies, will be ready for occupancy on July 1st.

A new revolutionary concept in Baby Swiss Cheese production, a one-pound Baby Swiss Nugget, has been introduced by Urs Raber, owner of Wild Cherry Cheese, Inc. of Thorp, Wisconsin.

10 Years Ago (1998)

Well-known Wisconsin comedian, Larry Heagle, entertained Thorp High School students at last Thursday’s Awareness Day. Heagle used a combination of humor and guitar music to get students involved.

The recent release of the 1997-98 Wisconsin State Achievement scores presents more confusion than information for those assessing Wisconsin’s student scholastic achievements.
