100 Years Ago (1908)

The flag on the Garrison Mercantile Cos. Flag pole was floated at half mast on Friday last in honor of ex-president Grover Cleveland whose funeral took place that day.

St. Bernard’s Parochial School completed its first year’s work on Friday last with appropriate exercises. The enrollment during the year has reached nearly 100, and no doubt, this number will be exceeded next year.

You can save money by buying an Edison Phonograph. How much do you suppose you pay for theatres, concerts and other amusements? For far less money you can buy an Edison Phonograph and keep supplied with new records. Adv.

75 Years Ago (1933)

Roger Creek and Town Line – Art Samulson is raising raccoons as a side line. He now has nine full grown animals and nine puppies.

A new baseball team has been organized in the neighborhood named the “Northern Stars.” Clem Herman has been elected manager of the team.

Wm. Farning, street commissioner of Neillsville, was killed in an auto accident near Beloit, on Tuesday of last week.

50 Years Ago (1958)

The first family to receive the mobile home offered one month’s free rent to any disaster victim was the Rebuen (Rueben) Vetterkind family. The home is a 38-footer and was received on Tuesday, June 17, 1958. The home was offered by the Wisconsin Mobile Home Association and the month’s insurance was paid by the Thorp Finance Corporation.

25 Years Ago (1983)

A workman on the Thorp water tower was dwarfed as he hung from ropes while in the process of doing repainting work on the tower during the past week. The water tower was repainted on the interior and the exterior, with all the work completed on Tuesday, June 28.

Approximately 180 graduates of Thorp High School are expected to attend the ninth annual Thorp Alumni Association (TAA) reunion this weekend.

The Red Cross Bloodmobile was in Thorp last Thursday, June 23, at the Thorp Elementary School gym. According to Mrs. Dolly Hubbard, a total of 149 pints of blood were donated.

10 Years Ago (1998)

Car crashing enthusiasts were treated to plenty of competitive action Sunday at the annual Lions Club sponsored Demolition Derby. Crowds enjoyed perfect weather along with all the action.

Thorp resident Eugene Barnett, 56 years old, was found dead in his car at the Black River County Park last Thursday afternoon. According to autopsy results, Barnett died of a heart attack. He had his dog with him in his car, which was parked at the wayside.
