100 Years Ago (1908)

South Worden – Wm. Sommers gave a farewell last week Tuesday evening.  Refreshments and lunch were served.  Mr. Sommers expects to go away in a few days and Dan Kennedy of Owen has rented his saloon. – Louis and Leander Laflex have each purchased Columbia talking machines.
 
Dan’l Colby leaves here on Friday for Eau Claire, from which point he will start down the Chippewa River in a gasoline launch, and thence on down the Mississippi, on a pleasure jaunt until he gets tired of the outing.  L. B. Rivers, of Stevens Point, will accompany him.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
Kodak films developed and 8 hi-gloss prints (35¢ coin).  (One) free 5 by 7 enlargement with each roll.
 
Last Sunday evening thieves stole three wheels, including tires, from Jack Dallas’ car, which was parked on the street in front of his home.
 
Mitterhoffer News – Stanley Rakowski had the misfortune of losing his home by fire Friday night.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
A spectacular and severe electrical storm flashing across Clark County, jarred residents out of their beds early Monday morning.  Sleepy-eyed individuals, still jittery following the terrific tornado, which swept just south of Thorp in early June, were roused shortly before 5 a.m. by what was described as “an almost continual flash of lightning” accompanied by heavy rain and some wind.
 
Breezy Hill News – John Pagel had a barn raising on Wed. to replace the one destroyed by the tornado.
 
25 years Ago (1983)
 
Thorp’s Polish Heritage Picnic was termed a great success with enthusiastic crowds and delicious food and interesting conversation.
 
On June 18, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Alger celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with an informal buffet and dance at Goggle Eye Trap Club.  Kenneth Alger married Betty DeSota on June 15, 1958 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stanley, WI.
 
Elizabeth Lange won a crown and a $1,000 scholarship when she became Miss Otero County of New Mexico.  She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernell Lange of Thorp and a 1979 graduate of Thorp high School.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
Some 400 workers are involved in laying a 189 mile section of petroleum pipeline, part of a pipeline stretching from Canada to the Chicago area.  Workers completed the section crossing the Black River northeast of Thorp on Thursday.
