100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – Rev. A. J. Capellen who organized the first Catholic Church in Stanley twelve years ago, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls on the 13th inst.
 
South Worden – P. Biddle, R. Biddle, C. Barth and L. Laflex have completed their turnpike jobs in the Town of Reseburg for the new mail route.
 
Walter Rubelee went to McCumber, ND, on Monday where he expects to secure a situation as section foreman on a railroad.
 
Last Sunday the new Lutheran Church southeast of Thorp was dedicated.  It was a day of rejoicing for the congregation which is now in possession of a very handsome house of worship.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Schmidt of the Town of Worden were quite badly injured on Monday when their car met a Minnesota car on the highway west of the village.  Both were taken to the hospital at Stanley for treatment.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – Everett Starks has perfected a machine for making rope out of binder twine.
 
Breezy Hill Cheese Factory Neighborhood – The reforestation men are kept busy in this vicinity fighting fire this past week. – Threshing finished in the neighborhood on Tuesday and silo filling started on Monday.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
The Thorp Public Schools will open their doors for the 1958-59 school term on Tuesday, September 2nd.
 
The body of John Schwartz, 62, was found in a blackberry patch 7 miles east and 3 ¼ miles south of Thorp in the Town of Longwood early Tuesday morning.
 
R. V. Boyer, superintendent of schools in Stanley from 1950 to 1957 has accepted a teaching position in the junior high school in Chippewa Falls.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
Cyndy Verkuilen, daughter of Marvin and Diane Verkuilen, Thorp, received First Blue for Grand Champion Purebred Doe over six months old for the third consecutive year at the Clark County Fair.
 
A 48’x120’ addition is being constructed at Thorp Barn Equipment, just south of Thorp on CTH-M.  The purpose of the addition is to provide additional room for manufacturing.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
Just think of it as a giant erector set, fellas!  Thorp Lions Club volunteers have been working many evenings, even past sunset, to get the new playground equipment in place in Thorp Park.
