100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – Nels Stalheim and Nels G. Olson are building a new store building 28x108 feet of cement blocks near Olson’s furniture store on Willard Street.
 
Reseburg Ramblings – Steve Nowicki has begun the erection of a handsome farm residence. – Threshing machines have begun their work in this vicinity.
 
Peter Phillippi purchased Art Seaman’s half interest in the Seaman & Glasshoff livery last week.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
About 150 people attended the Sons of Veterans picnic at A. N. Sisco’s Sunday.
 
Bellinger Square – Latest news are forest fires and the struggling attempt to check them. Some are beyond control.  Most of the boys from here were fighting fires for the past two weeks and were called again this Tuesday morning.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
A Stanley woman was killed south of that city Sunday evening.  Mrs. George Gerris, 39, was killed instantly about 7:30 p.m. when a Jaguar sports car she was riding in missed a curve on CTH H.
 
A machine shed and tool shed on the Sid Alger farm two miles west and one mile south of Thorp, in the Town of Thorp, were burned to the ground about 1:15 p.m. Sunday.
 
Thorp shivered Monday morning, the coldest August 25 in about 30 years.  Many a farmer in the area reported their readings at the 36 mark.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
Thorp Public Schools have eight new teachers this year, three elementary, four high school and one intern: Ronald Lien, Intern; Eva Borneke, elementary exceptional education; Janet Schmitt, high school math, science, computer science; Cynthia Campbell, high school Chapter I; Kevin Halfmann, high school guidance; John Warrick, elementary 4th grade; Jeanette Mutchler, high school physical education/health; Jean Van Houten, elementary, exceptional education.
 
Jeffery Staffeil, son of Grace Staffeil, 104 N. Clark St. Thorp, was named Soldier of the year for those of E-4 ran or below at the Detachment 1, Company D, 724th Engineering Battalion of the National Guard.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
The Thorp School District joined a growing number of schools in the Head Start region in entering into a lease agreement to house the government-funded program.
 
Thorp resident Delton Ebben was named one of the “Ten Most Admired Senior Citizens” of the M&I Marshall & Ilsley Bank sponsored contest.
