100 Years Ago (1908)

L. W. Gibbs secured the contract for building the new school house in the Foley District on Monday.
 
Herman Friess purchased in the neighborhood of $1500 worth of cattle from Melvin Nye last week and shipped two car loads to Chicago on Sunday last.
 
The roads on proposed rural mail routes nos. 3 and 4 from the village have been completed and the requisite number of patrons pledged themselves to provide approved boxes.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
Lone Oak Cheese Factory Neighborhood – While hauling gravel, Walter Marek was injured by the gravel pit caving in.  He was thrown with his face on the edge of the truck box, receiving a bad cut over the left eye, requiring ten stitches, besides being badly bruised about the neck and shoulders.
 
Taft Township – The fires caused a lot of excitement for a number of people Friday where haystacks had to be moved.  One new fire around Mitterhoffer broke loose and threatened some different farmers.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
“A musical journey through the Southern Slavic countries,” will be enjoyed by residents of Thorp and the surrounding area, when they attend the annual presentation of the Duquesne University Tamburitzans at the Thorp High School auditorium Thursday, September 11th.
 
One of the biggest bargain sales in Thorp’s history is scheduled to take place this Friday and Saturday by the retail merchants of Thorp Businessmen’s Association.
 
Breezy Hill News – A hard hailstorm passed thru this vicinity on Aug. 19, following the tornado path.  Much damage was done to some gardens and cornfields.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
Winners of the Thorp Cub Scouts pack 27’s cub-mobile races were Dion Moskiewicz, first place; Mike Luzinski, second place; and Ryan Gilbert, third place.  The races were run on Sunday, August 28 and marked the final summer activity for 1983.
 
Thorp High School’s football cheerleaders for 1983 are Kari Boie, Jodi Svoma, Pam Bieno, Susie Noah, Suzanne Miller and Eva Malecki.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
While computer buffs and businesses are worried about problems arising from the year 2000 computer glitch, the City of Thorp is already getting prepared for the year 2001.  That is when the state will renovate STH 73, which goes through the middle of Thorp.
