100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – The number of students enrolled in the Stanley High School is 107, which is an increase of 15 over last year. – The Stanley post office was burglarized about midnight on Thursday last and a haul was made there from of about $250 in cash and $600 in stamps.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
The International Commerce Commission today authorized the Stanley, Merrill and Phillips railway to abandon its 22-mile line from Polley to Walrath in Taylor and Rusk Counties, Wisconsin.
 
Yaeger News – The Yaeger School opened on Sept. 4th with an enrollment of 40 in the primary room, Miss Marie Herman, teacher, and 43 in the upper grade room, Ray Ropella, principal.
 
Otto Hiller purchased the Fred Greve cheese factory, store and residence last week and is continuing the manufacture of cheese at the plant.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
An automobile stolen from a Chippewa Falls car lot was apparently intended to be used, as a getaway vehicle in a burglary in the Owen area early Tuesday morning.
 
Donald Ryniec, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo C. Ryniec, Thorp, has enlisted for Automotive Maintenance Helper Course, Army Technical School Program, for a period of 3 years.
 
Thaddeus E. Zwacki, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Zwacki, Rt. No. 1, Thorp, WI has enlisted for 6 years Army Reserve with 2 years active duty.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
St. Mary’s Czestochowa Catholic Church, 5 miles west, 3 miles north of Thorp, celebrated their 75th Diamond Jubilee on Sunday, Sept. 4, following several months of planning and preparation.  In attendance for the occasion were: Bishop F. W. Freking, former pastors, parish members, past and present, relatives and friends.
 
Brian Haas, Rt. 3, Thorp, found a balloon on Sunday, Sept. 11 that was released from Minneapolis on the same day.
 
Tragedy struck on Monday, Sept. 5 in the form of a fatal auto accident at the junction of County Highways E and O in the Town of Little Black in Taylor County.  Mrs. Edward Frederick, 88, was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-car accident after the car she was riding in apparently failed to stop at a stop sign.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
The United Methodist Church in Thorp has a new pastor.  Michael Weaver arrived recently where he assumed his first full-time appointment.
 
City Hall will get a new roof before the snow flies.  The city council awarded the job to Northcentral Insulation of Eau Claire at a cost of $15,240.
