100 Years Ago (1908)

The farm house of Mike Turek, in course of construction on his farm near Gilman, was destroyed by forest fires the fore part of last week.
 
Al Blank went down into the town of Worden with a sprinkling tank on Saturday last to assist in saving several piles of lumber owned by Nye, Lusk & Hudson, and about one (the) time the (he) reached his destination, a steady downpour of rain made the trip unnecessary.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year at the annual meeting of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118, at their hall on Thursday evening last.  Commander – Stanley Glamkowski; First Vice-Commander – Leif Larson; Second Vice-Commander – Joe Benzschawel; Third Vice-Commander – Felix Boinski; Adjutant – Newell E. Qualle; Finance Officer – Hjalmer Brandsness; Service Officer – Sam Barnhart; Historian – William Wagner; Chaplain – Dr. C. K. Dittmer; Sergeant-at-Arms – Henry Huls.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
A flurry of major and minor automobile accidents kept Dr. Phillip Jorgenson of Thorp busy over the weekend.  At least ten persons were injured badly enough to require hospitalization the past weekend and treated Tuesday were three Stanley students.
 
At the annual fall convention of the Wisconsin Locally Owned Telephone Group held last week in Stevens Point, the following officers for the coming year were elected: Chairman, J. M. Keating, Thorp; Vice Chairman, Charles Iverson, Amhersa (Amherst); Secretary, Karl Mass, Phillips; and Treasurer, A. H. Bowden, Almond.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
King Dave Pszeniczny and Queen Lynette Van Ert rode in their royal ‘chariot’ in the homecoming parade last Friday afternoon.
 
A 36x120 foot barn in rural Gilman was destroyed by fire early Tuesday, September 20, as were 60 head of cattle.  The barn, owned by the William Hendricks family, began burning during a thunderstorm, which dumped about two inches of rain on the area.
 
A new storm sewer and water shut-off valve was installed at the corner of Washington and School Streets.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
The 1998 Outstanding Young Farmer Award was given by the Thorp Jaycees to Dave and Karen Pszeniczny.
 
Jeanette Kodl was recognized as the 1998 Thorp Jaycees Outstanding Young Community Person.
 
The September 24th groundbreaking ceremony officially marked the beginning of construction on the new Stanley Correctional Facility complete with politicians.
