100 Years Ago (1908)

A ball game at the driving park on Sunday last between local nines from village and country resulted in a victory for the village boys it is claimed by the latter.  The country boys claim a victory of 15 to 10.
 
Duplicate whist promises to be popular among the ladies of the village during the winter season. A small party, have enjoyed playing the game at weekly meeting during the summer and the number is to be increased, and all expect to become experts at the game.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
Bobb’s Mill – The barn, silo, and machine shed on Stanley Nojuch’s farm were destroyed by fire on Thursday.
 
Another one of a series of recitals given by the piano pupils of Mr. George McClaren was held at her home on Saturday afternoon.  The following young people presented the program: Dorothy Broeren, Dawn Ehlert, Helen McClaren, Margaret Neis, Betty Nolechek, and Geraldine Nye.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
A series of advertisement run in Wisconsin daily newspapers by the Thorp Finance Corporation has earned the company an honorable mention in the “Ad of Distinction” contest sponsored by the National Consumer Finance Association.
 
Eight boys and girls from Thorp High School will demonstrate mixers – folk and square dances at the Physical Education Meeting at the Northwestern Wisconsin Education Association Convention, Thursday, at the Memorial High School in Eau Claire.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
The Thorp Lioness Club is sponsoring a Fall Home Tour in Thorp on Saturday afternoon, October 15.
 
The Thorp Alumni Association presented the Thorp Public Library with a chime clock in appreciation for the library’s cooperation in the use of the “Min Conway” room, used by the TAA for display of memorabilia and for conducting their annual meeting.
 
A two-year-old child who was missing for over three hours from her Eau Claire area home was found by State Trooper, Jeff Frenette, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Frenette of Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
Cheryl Abramczak’s beautiful pumpkin cake took second place, September 22nd, in the statewide cake decorating competition sponsored by Valley Bakers Association.
 
Thorp IGA, owned and operated by Dan and Maureen Welgos, received the prestigious Five Star rating, putting the store in the top 10% of IGA’s 2,000 supermarkets nationwide.
